Ok so now its the guy's fault that women get ticked if he brings up something she doesn't want to discuss. Ok, I see how it is. ;)

I think it may be a combination of things. Guys tend to be more plain spoken than we are most of the time, which is actually a good thing I think. I wish I was more plain spoken myself. Women aren't really used to this and, when a guy is honest/plain spoken, it's not always received well and, many times, we infer something that was never intended.

Just seems to me that a man/woman should be able to rationally discuss pretty much anything if they choose their words carefully. *shrugs* Maybe I'm wrong. Sure wouldn't be the first time...

(Don't act like you guys don't do the dance of joy too though ;) )

I know that one of my guy friends won't say when something is bothering him because of the way he was brought up; guys are suppose to be strong and not show any sign of weakness. I think that sometimes he thinks talking about things that bother him, shows that he is weak in an area. This may be true for some other guys.

Why won't guys tell you if they don't like something?

For me it's the whole pick your battles thing. If it's not something that's a huge deal and I can get over, then I'll eventually get over it.

An example of this taking place: when I was married my wife always bought me sandwich crackers for lunch for work, I didn't like sandwich crackers but I never complained because it wasn't a big deal. A year later when we're out shopping and she finally asks if I want them rather than just buying them like she usually did, I finally told her I didn't like them. I was being honest, but had she not asked I still wouldn't have said anything because, again, not a big deal.

I know there are some women i have learned to hold back with. Because they have such poor reactions when i am honest. They either argue my point, refuse to see what i'm saying, or get hurt or offended at the drop of a hat. Usually in the midst of it all they get hyper-emotional. Then it turns into some long, drawn out issue, instead of being short and simple. So you risk an argument or a guilt trip. Who wants to mess with that?

could it be ... We are simply to stubborn looking at an idea or a thought from only one point of view? (ours?) Validating whats coming from the other persons point of view without trying to change it or corrupt it into what we think "ought" to be... I miss common manners ... Seems people react rather than respond most of the time to each other .... this is both sides ....

cause so guys are monastic christians i perfer monastic silence and pray through it thats all quiet peace-full dance-able 2.

A lot of the men I'm around tend to talk toooooooo much. They aren't plain spoken at all. My brother, for example, tends to give way to many details before getting to the point. And by the second sentence, I'm ready to put a piece of tape over his mouth.

My question is how do you get them (men) to open up when they clam up?

I know when I clam up, it's usually because I'm feeling patronized and pressured. Even though you may be asking innocent questions, too many is too much.

Just try to relax the situation. If you want open conversation, talk like your having a conversation, and then interject your questions while talking rather than asking them all at once.

Start the conversation for them. Invite them to say what's up, but don't force.

"Penny for your thoughts?"

"You seem distracted today. Any reason?"

"I hope my friend didn't upset you yesterday when she brought up _____... 'cause I don't think that was fair of her to say."

"Do you like when I make ____ for dinner?"

"Are you upset with me about ____?"

Ask him for feedback. Get specific if you need to. Men like direct questions. Don't be vague or expect him to read your mind.
And when he does talk, treat it like the best thing in the world that he trusts you enough to be open with you. Don't criticize. The more you reward his honesty with a desire to understand and help, the more he will say things rather than keeping them inside.

:)

Of course sometimes he really doesn't have anything to say. In which case you can just relax. :p

My advice is if he is at your house to start really pressuring him, to the point he is so uncomfortable he leaves, then start calling him on his cell phone and texing him..WHATS WRONG?? TELL MEEEE!!
I suggest you keep this up until he blocks your number or gets a restraining order.

It all shows just how much you care :)
