One of my aunts is gay and she's been trying to reach out to me and the rest of my family. (My mom, other aunts and uncles) A lot of my family will rarely speak to her, including my mom. I don't want my family alone to influence my decision about whether or not I should keep in contact with her. I would like to know what some of you think since you are all Christians. I will also be praying about the situation.

You may be the only Christian she knows. And Christians are to love everyone....love the sinner, hate the sin. Just like God does with us.

I vote for contact :).

yes we love our family and we would all love to see them all go to heaven along with ourselves. i myself know there are many members of my family who do not follow the christian faith that when i explain anything religious to them they bark on and on about how wrong i am. At the end of the day, i know that i cant force anyone to believe the same as i do, but i still love them because they are my family. dont force anything unto your aunt, but if it comes up, she can still go to church and become christian. my uncle is gay and he is an ordain minister and an active member of his church (though me is not "out" to most). being gay may not be correct to some, all, or none depending who u talk to, but a little faith goes a long way. ill keep you and your family in my prayers

We always used to say "hate the sin but love the sinner". And a person doesn't care how much you know until they know how much you care. As long as she's not reaching out for sex, be her friend. God will create an opening in due course to discuss lifestyle. Then just share your heart about the real kind of love Jesus has.

And don't forget to pray for her. One of the greatest Christian writers of all time, once he got saved, was a man named Augustine of Hippo. His mother Monica prayed for him for 20 years while he was a playboy. It could be a long term investment, but especially if you're one of only a few people who knows the Lord in her life, He could really use you to change things.

Thank y'all for the quick responses. I will definitely pray for her.

What do you mean by trying to reach out to you?

Does you Aunt consider herself to be a saved Christian?

If she thinks she is a Christian, and a praticing lesbian, then this is a tough situation.

I would encourage you first off to make sure you are in the faith, have repented of your sins, and are on the narrow road, another words no plank in your eye, then you can admonish your gay aunt with the word, and call her to repent and seek the mercy of God!

Jas 1:21 Therefore putting aside all filthiness and overflowing of evil, receive in meekness the implanted Word, which is able to save your souls.
Jas 1:22 But become doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

When I say reach out it means she wants to have regular contact and occassional visits with my family and myself. (She lives in a different state) I'm not sure if she considers herself a saved Christian...that's definitely something I need to find out.

Thank you for your response!

I had a gay uncle. My family alienated him because they opposed his lifestyle and my sister and I were barely allowed to speak to him or get to know him. Mail and phone calls were both screened and they did a lot to make sure we didn't ever have the chance to communicate or bond with him. I only spent time with him once and it was after he was diagnosed with AIDS and we knew he was going to die. My mom took my sister and I out to Ohio to see him and we spent a week with him. It was unnerving to find out that the man my family had mocked and vilified all my life to the point where I was actually expecting to meet a mean angry man, was actually a kind, funny, and loveable person. When he died all I could feel was anger and to this day I still feel I was robbed of a relationship with him. And it makes me sad that he had to die alone. Gay or not he was family.

I would strongly encourage you not to let your aunt's sexual orientation stop you from having a relationship with her. You don't have to agree with what she's doing, but that's how families work. You love each other even if you don't always agree with each other. Speaking as someone who's living with the regret of having never bonded with my uncle, it's not something you want in your life.

She is your aunt... why couldn't you have a relationship with her? If you do not want to associate with her in the areas of her life that is more about her "gayness", by centering on neutral activities and not socializing with her partner(s), tell her so, she can honor that or decline. Just keep in mind that her value system is not christian... thus she is not a good go to person for most advice... but that doesn't mean you can't value her opinion on the cake you baked or the color of the shirt you bought... that kind of thing.

Vikkikate, I'm so sorry you and your sister weren't allowed to have hardley any contact with your uncle. It makes me even more thankful that I'm grown and allowed to make contact with my aunt if I choose without screened phone calls. I'm sure your family was doing what they thought was best at the time for you and your sister. When I was younger my family always "encouraged" me to "not like" my aunt and they still do that to this day.

Thank you for sharing your true life story with me!

God bless!

Accept her reaching out to you
Pray for her
Let God's love show through you

If she is Gay, she is a sinner. So are you, as we all are! (Romans 3:23). This does not mean you shouldn't be there for her!

You should definitely contact her. You may be the only family she has. I heard this quote tonight, "Can that homosexual have a moment with God through you, with your very witness? Will they stop denying God, because of this moment? Moments where He can love on people through you, because you're marked." -Pastor Phil Allen

I think you should still talk to her even though no one else does and be an example. Yeah homosexuality is a sin, but I think regardless of her sin she is your aunt, she's family and communicating with her is the right thing to do...however if there is ever a time when she asks you about your christianity or if she does something that you dont agree with that conflicts with your beliefs, thats the opportunity to be real with her and let her know why it's not right and share the truth with her.

Dear Lord why is there such a debate as to weather or not they should respond to their Aunt reaching out to them just because she is gay? .
Regardless of what faith your Aunt is remeber thow shall not judge.
If a man came to me in rags smelly and dirty in need of food would i turn him away no i would bring him into my house and let him eat at my table , we are supposed to be christians ??

Why would she be reaching out for sex its her Aunt just because her Aunt is gay does not mean she wants to have sex with every woman alive regardless of them being related ???

I have known the same thing to happen among heterosexuals. One case was very close to me, and nearly ruined the wife's life, as the offending husband was discovered for other sex crimes and jailed. I spoke to the woman not a month ago, which is why it was on my mind. You are quite right that it would be rare, but one never knows.

So what you're saying is PEOPLE regardless of orientation are capable of sexual perversion...

I hate to be the one to point this out, but this isn't exactly new information lol. :)
