In Revelation chapter 13 we have a beast come out of the sea. who is this beast? is it related to the ones in Daniel? let's take a look.
Rev 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
The First thing we will notice is that this beast rises up out of the sea/a body of water. what does this mean?
Rev 17:15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.
Waters represent a populated area of nations and peoples etc. so this beast/power will rise in a populated area. We will look at the heads and horns in a later study on chapter 17.
Rev 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
notice that this beast is directly connected to the beasts of Daniel. the leopard, bear and lion. these three beasts come from Daniel 7. The interesting thing here is that the fourth beast is not mentioned. This gives us an indication that this beast is connected with the fourth beast in which the little horn came up out of. So far this beast would seem to be in line with Papal Rome from Daniel.
We know who the dragon is because we are told in the chapter before this.
Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
So the Power behind this beast is none other than Satan himself.
Rev 13:3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
Here we see that one of the heads is wounded but then is healed. Remember that Daniel told us that the reign of the Papacy would end in 1798. more on that in a few verses.
Rev 13:4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
So this Papal power would rise again after it received its wound. but notice what the next verse says.
Rev 13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
Does that sound familiar to you?
Dan 7:25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.
Notice that both of these speak great things for a time period. This period is the same time period.
let me explain:
time and times and the dividing of time. means 1 year + 2 years + half a year. knowing that the Jews counted 12 months in the year each month of 30 days. This means that the time given here is 1260 days. how many months are in 3 and a half years? 42 months.
So both 42 months and time, times and half a time are the same time period of 1260 days in which we learned from Daniel was the time that the Papacy reigned from 538AD to 1798AD. (see studies on Daniel 7 for details)
So it seems clear that this power in Revelation that comes out of the Populated area is in Fact the little horn that rises in the populated area of Europe after the split of the Roman empire.
Rev 13:6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
Rev 13:7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
Rev 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Rev 13:9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.
Rev 13:10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
These last verses both happened during its 1,260 year reign and will happen again on a world wide scale. but this beast will not do it alone. The Papacy will need more power behind it to do this.
Dan 8:24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.
Notice even in Daniel it says that he will do this but not by his own power. History will repeat itself. He will once again come against Gods people. In fact chapter 12 will give us some insight into this. We will look there first and then we can look at the second beast/power that will give power to the Papacy in these last days.
