It's all in the Bible. The Bible is like condensed soup, very rich. Additional study is useful and valid in confirming the Bible and deepening our faith and expanding our walk -- spice for the recipe.
Some study History, Archeology, Hermeneutics and Linguistics, Theology, The Tree of Life, the System of The Way ... But these all confirm the simple truths that are in the New Testament and for some, lead them astray into intellectualism, haughtiness or a temptation to use this knowledge for power, control or gain. It has to start with the Bible read all the way through, and having read once, to go back and re-read with a now broader sense of the scriptures. It always comes back to the Bible as the root of all nourishment. Knowing, accepting and following the precepts of right living and the warnings against behaviors that can lead to suffering is all the simple faith one needs to start. How many have read the Bible once, how many twice? How many claim a preacher, a building, a life verse and a fave song instead?
The Sermon on the Mount gives a hint at the steps in climbing the mountain - from humility as a first step, to suffering for righteousness sake, to the call to be salt and light, keeping the commandments, clarifications in 'you have heard it said, but I say ...' ... to a call --- Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
