This is often most misused and abused passage of the Bibles, of course Ephesians 5 22-33 as well. This is not a green light to treat a woman like a doormat or abuse her, it is not a millstone around a woman's neck in such a relationship, submitting to your husband is a Godly act but only if the husband lives up to his part of the bargain..
Absolutely! It is coincidental that I just quoted Ephesians 5:25 in another thread, "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her...". But the fact is, nowhere in scripture does it say that marriage is a bed of roses. Unfortunately, feeling "happy" isn't high on the list of biblical prerequisites for marriage.
You do not say specifically whether your husband is a strong believer, like you. If he is not, I believe that the focus of your prayers becomes obvious; pray that God will open your husband's eyes, and heart, to the true role he is expected to play as a husband. And if he is a believer, there may be other issues interfering with his fulfilling that role. Did something happen "a couple of years ago" that may have affected his outlook? Or, as BarlyGurl suggested, have you "muscled in" on his territory without really realizing what you were doing?
In any case, according to Scripture, divorce is
never the answer. God hates divorce. Jesus instructed the Pharisees thusly, "“Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard.
But it was not this way from the beginning. Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.
And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.” (From the gospels of Matthew and Mark, emphasis added) Finally, the Apostle, Paul, tells us, "And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife,..." (1 Corinthians 7: 13-14)
In my opinion, you need to continue to pray. Continue to try and keep the lines of communication open. Ask God to give you the strength to deal with your problems and never lose sight of the fact that the marriage vows say "for better or worse, till death do us part". That is a
3-way covenant.
God bless you richly.
