Let's say you met and dated a person that was perfect for you in every way. But do to certain circumstances you can't be together right now. Let's say you really love this person. Ok, if you knew that someday in the future you would definately be together and be happy from that point forward. Would you wait for them? If so how long would you wait? But here's the catch. The wait would be somewhere between 5 and 10 years. But also bear in mind, this is the perfect one for you. What would you do?

IF (huge "if") I felt that way about someone and knew:

1. They felt as strongly about it as I did: and
2. A change in circumstances was expected,

I would wait.

I've been there. I was in a long term relationship with someone (3 years). His job (that he did not have when we met) requires him to be overseas for years at a time. He wanted to marry me. He loved me. I loved him. If I had been given reason to believe that his circumstances would have changed, if I would not have been required to be alone for the majority of the time or have to live on the other side of the planet from my son for extended periods (my two choices), I would have waited.

I'm a very patient person, so I'd wait a week. Two at the most.

I am not sure what your situation is but I will be praying for you. I know my son waited three years for the one he had dated in H.S.

Personally, I would wait on God. Because I know that nothing in the future is certain other than the perfection of His love and will.

I'm waiting. Anything you feel the Lord is leading you to do is going to be worth it :)

hahahhhaha, have no clue :D....but i think you are the one who can answer that question 'coz you know how strong or not is your love to that person, so I can only say "fighting":p

Those are interesting questions to ponder.

My first thought was: Yes, I'd wait however many years it took even if I only got to spend a short time with that special person.

Realistically though, why would you be completely seperated from a person for that length of time? There are a lot of ways to communicate....Or maybe "can't be together right now" meant something else to you in that post rather than no communication whatsoever.

Then the question comes in, how would you know you would definitely be together after that waiting period? Is it something you believed you heard from God? Do you make some sort of commitment to the person to come together after that time?
I'd say you'd better be absolutely sure on that one. It's very possible we can think we hear a "yes" from God sometimes on things that we really want, when instead that's not the case. That can be a real kick in the pants when it's realized, to say the least.

In the end though, can you really know what you'd do without actually being faced with this unlikely scenario?

Excellent question, zero.

Thank you, sir. About the other thing...maybe the person is incarcerated at the moment. Just one of many, many possibilities. :)

Yeah.
That's why I wondered if he meant no contact whatsoever or only physically apart. Even if someone were behind bars, they could still write at least. Same thing if it was long distance. You could still communicate.

Perfect for you for YOU???? I find it interesting that Flight316 is a man, and that the basis of looking for the perfect one is something I have mentioned on other threads. As a woman...NOPE... not waiting. That is making a commitment without a commitment... women do it ALL the time to their peril and too many men are willing to to let it be so. I can't think of a single scenario where WAITING to be with someone (I interpret this as married) should require an extended (years) waiting period. Christ died for us to be set free, and serve him... not to enslave ourselves to foolish uncommitted relationships which give him no GLORY.

So Zero and Niceguy... doesn't your bibles read..."men love your wives as Christ loves the Church and gave His life up for her????" It kinda sounds like you are entertaining this "man have a fish on the hook indefinately" scenario which benefits the man??? How does woman on hook benefit from protection provision and the self sacrificing love on Christ in this scenario???? A man in prison has already done SOMETHING in act of opposition to the fulfilling of a marriage covenant no wise Christian woman would wait.

No. You're seeing things there that neither of us said. Plus, I don't think the OP was talking about "keeping someone on the hook" either. He can correct me if I'm wrong. I didn't get that from his post though.

Okay... what is it you think I am seeing that wasn't said? I did say "kinda sounds like" so in replying with a definative NO... can you clarify what is meant to be comunicated?

Barly, the OP seemed to imply that it was impossible for either to do anything but wait. Not that it was a choice made by one, or lack of commitment.

Barly:
It was in direct response to your words I put in bold when I quoted you. I don't entertain the "man keeping a fish on the hook" thing. That was way off base, and not even close to who I am or what I believe.

Also, what Lightning said is what I took from the OP too.

I am asking for clarification. I did say... I assume being together means MARRIED. I am a woman so that is the perspective I best represent. The OP did say dating relationship which alludes to NOT MARRIED. Thus I am wondering than... how do "they" (this quasi-couple) have no choice? If man is in love with woman... he should marry her... I can think of no scenario to prevent this... except sudden incarceration... then he would NOT be able to fulfill his marriage covenant responsibilites and should not expect the woman to wait. If woman is willing to WAIT for a man indefinately she is committing to NO COMMITMENT from the man. And for the sake of redundancy I will refer to my first posted response for concluding this one.

Can any of the men clarify what sort of imagined scenario you are thinking of when suggesting you would forsake all others and wait indefinately for a woman who is unavailable to be your wife????
