Okay, so when I was in High School, I had to write an essay on a topic of my choice. I chose religion, which wasn't my best decision. Anyway, we had some strange requirements for our essays one of them was a Ted Talk video.
This was all I could come up with, unfortunately. However, it got me thinking. I want to know what you think.

By 2:16, it became obvious. One of the things you need to learn is Epistemology.

You especially need to understand different worldviews, to be able to have better critiques.

Example,

Daniel Dennet holds to what is called "Scientific Naturalism", so the idea that anything could be non-natural is excluded from possibilities at a philosophical level. So when he opens discussion about the design of a cow, the possibility in his worldview that something non-natural such as God could ever be an answer, to him isn't even an option on the table when he begins consideration of an answer.

Religion? Or Christianity!

In a perfect world, the school kids would get a daily dose of The Gospel with at least an hour a day to studying and exploring Christianity, say like an Alpha course

Is there anything specific you are wanting?

I think teaching religion could be great, but I think it should not be required by the state nor be in public schools. In a public school, Christianity would be taught with a secular/atheist bias. Having something such as Christianity taught in public schools without significant improvement in the public school system, would result in very erroneous teaching of "Christianity".

Ideally it would be great, but in reality I think it would only be a detriment.

Hmmm. Sounds like you need a dose of the "peace of God". "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7)

The fact is that this particular debate could go on forever. As Jimmy Diggs points out, those who deny the existence of God have their own agenda. Neither argument is "proveable" on an empirical level. To the best of my knowledge, nobody living today has ever seen God. On the other hand, it is my understanding that the deeper "science" digs into the mysteries of the universe, the more the results point to existence of intelligent design.

It has been my experience (limited I admit) that when you examine the motives of those who are working so hard to disprove God, you will generally find an underlying reason. It generally has something to do with what we Christians call (gasp!) sin. If there is no God, there is no sin. There is no hell. There is no eternal punishment. And isn't that a comforting throught when you are boinking your neighbor's wife?

What it boils down to, I believe, is that you accept the fact of God and Christ, or you do not. No one can offer absolute proof in either case. But I am reminded of a bumper sticker that made the rounds a few years back, "if you're living like there is no God, you better be right!"

God bless you in your quest for answers.

In South Africa they prayed in school. they prayed at awards ceremonies and most sang hymns all day long. Its odd coming back to America where you have to be careful how and when you prayed in public schools. However, i know a group of teachers and parents that meet every week to pray over the school and pray over specific matters affecting the school.

that group started Matthew's ministries which gives backbag full of food to students who would otherwise not eat at home.

I think prayer allows us to open our hearts and minds to possible solutions to problems we might not even have noticed through the guidance of the Holy Spirit and it should be done at home and at school and every where you go. Even if it sometimes has to be silent prayer.

sometimes students learn more from our unspoken example than many sermons and lectures on the subject.

I think that a fair treatment of what the worlds ''major'' world religions believe would be a good thing in schools. It's usually a grave lack of understanding that eventually leads to most conflicts, and when it comes to religion, few people understand any religious background other than their own.

When it comes to teaching religion as in imposing one religious viewpoint upon others as superior than others...I'm against it in public schools, even if it's Christianity. Because who decides which Christianity to teach? Will it be Evangelicalism, Mainline Protestantism, Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Gnosticism, Pentecostalism, Calvinism, or what? Who gets to make that decision? So I'm not for that at all.

I'm not for it. I wouldn't want my kids being taught specific things that other Christian denominations teach, or being taught other religions.

If it were a purely academic study, like the college courses for World Religions, I'd be for that. That could even bring people together and prevent our kids from being ignorant to others beliefs.

I see religion as what is in the power of man to do.

James 1:27Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Now christianity has been declared as not a religion because living the christian life is not in the power of man to do since the standard of the teachings of Jesus are higher than the works of the law.

Since man cannot save himself by the deeds of the law, then neither can man follow Jesus Christ religiously like keeping a commitment or a promise to do so which is why the just shall live by faith.

Since believing in Jesus Christ as our Saviour, even in His name, is what has saved us, then continually believing in Jesus Christ as our Good Shepherd is how we can live by faith in the Son of God in us in living the christian life by continuing in His words to be His disciplesin following Him by His grace.

So it is because of Jesus Christ that we have this reconciled relationship with God now and so it is by living this reconciled relationship with God through Jesus Christ is how we live the christian life by faith.

Philippians 3:1Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe. 2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. 3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. 4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: 5 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; 6 Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.
7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection,....

Thus christianity is not a religion, but a relationship based on trusting Him at His word in getting to know Him as we see ourselves following Him by teh grace of God and His help.

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

John 6:28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:...9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; 10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ. 11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

This is why little children are free to come to Him because all they can do is trust the Lord.

Mark 10:13 And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. 15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

Jesus calls the religious of the world to get to know Him and to find their rest in Him for their souls.

Matthew 11:25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. 26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. 27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. 28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Not very many religious men will heed that call because of pride in all their love, zealousness, and work.

1 Corinthians 1:26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: 27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: 29 That no flesh should glory in his presence. 30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: 31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

Christianity can never be the Good News if it was on man to obtain salvation by his merits. It would be like any other religion, but because Jesus Christ is the Good News to man that man sees their hope in God and not in themselves.

Psalm 118:8 It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.

Psalm 100:3 Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

I think 90% of the difficulty in inter-faith dialogue is semantics. We have different terms for essentially the same thing, but we don't really understand what the other(s) are saying because we think they mean something else...

Christianity is a religion. Your personal relationship with Jesus Christ is how you manifest your religious beliefs as a Christian.

re·li·gion [ri-lij-uh n]
noun
1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
2. a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion.
3. the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices: a world council of religions.
4. the life or state of a monk, nun, etc.: to enter religion.
5. the practice of religious beliefs; ritual observance of faith.

Children will never be taught religion in public school. It doesn't mean there aren't kids in public schools who know Christ. I went to public schools and my parents sent me to Catechism classes. My children attend public school and I teach Sunday School. GOD IS part of our lives, unfortunately not all parents c are about GOD. If it were up to me I would make Christianity an option for kids in public school. Wouldn't have to learn but it would be a option. I'm sure it will be a cold day in H e double hockey sticks before that becomes an option in today's world.
