My parents were both born and raised in Prince Edward Island (an Island in Canada that is so small, you just have to walk out your front door and you will automatically bump into the person you will eventually marry!!!).

Speaking of odd parental facts - my father's brother married my mother's sister. So two brothers married two sisters - I don't know whether to think that is really cool or just plain weird - lol.

I hope that fact doesn't scare any of you Americans from visiting Canada (just think of us Canadians as the exact replica of those weird and "backwards" Americans living in Texas - lol).

Regardless... I do maintain, you have no idea what church I attend or what it is like.
Actually my point was more that transcendentalism has become a broader cultural phenomena as it has mutated into liberal and secular forms. Its influence goes far beyond Transcendentalist churches, which are rather non-existent these days. Sorry for the confusion.

So I'm a little bit puzzled as to how Gnostic, Platonic elements etc effected someone reading the bible in its original language?
The Levant was part of the Hellenistic world. Ever read Origin of Antioch? Justin Martyr sounds like Valentinus sometimes, and is quite obviously suffused with Greek and Gnostic religious ideas.

Arwen:
why does everything have to be theological/philosophical conversation in threads these days?
Because we're nerds. Small talk makes me sleep.

I guess its just the way I approach this forum. I think of the singles forum more easygoing, fun threads, some serious posts, helpful and encouraging, but leaving the debating to the bible study forum.

If the church's believing these sort of things are dead, may I ask why you think we would be infected by this in our church? Likewise if it is embodied in our culture, (just how exactly...??? People in the world are so so so materialistic if anything) why would it necessarily have infected the Church in Australia?

Please level the criticisms of churches in Australia as you see them, don't hold back, I may be able to respond to them a bit better and see whether they are accurate. I'm a little confused by what you are trying to say sorry.

Haha Arwen :), too many... urgh.... people with gross theological agendas in the Bible Study forum? I'd just post something here if I wanted to discuss a theological thing to be honest, people tend to be more open and willing to discuss ideas and the reasoning for why they take such positions here. :) Too many people talking and not enough listening.

My parents are divorced, however I believe they met at my Grandfather's church. He was a pastor and they met at a church that he was pastoring at at the time.

My father is a premillenial Arminian, and therefore he chose to marry my mother because he didn't want to spend the coming 1,000 years of peace as a single man, and my mother is a postmillenial Calvinist, and she felt she was predestined to marry my father and torment him until the world is perfected (which she believes is a long, long, long time from now!!!).

There, I combined the "How did your parents meet?" question with theology!!! And now my head hurts. I'm going to bed!!!

My parents were both educated professional types who were not really interested in marriage. Later in life than most people they met at a party, mom got pregnant, and they wanted to "do the right thing" so they married. It was a disaster and they divorced when I was two. I have no memories of my biological dad at all. Never saw him again. He never remarried and had no other children. Some folks aren't cut out for it.

My mom married again when I was six. She met him at work. The incredible man who adopted and helped raise me will always be my hero.

P.S. - Descyple...I totally love you man. bahahahaha

Square dancing club at Kansas State University in the mid to late '80s. They married in May of '87. Mother dear thought he looked like a good guy to raise kids, so she gave him her phone number. I don't know if she became aware of his alcohol habits before or after they began dating.

Haven't had a chance to pop in and engage, but its interesting to see all the variety in everyone's responses.

Descyple...I totally love you man.

I would like you all to bear witness to the fact that the above quote marks the official beginning of Jullianna and Descyple as a couple - unless Jullianna was being sarcastic and didn't mean it (oh no, it's like my prom night all over again!!!).

I hope everyone noticed that at no time did Jullianna "deny" our new relationship in her last post!!!

Jullianna, since I believe in courting (and not dating) I have taken your "Descyple..... I love you man" comment as your proposal to me.

Now lets figure out which stores we like best so we can tell everyone here on CC where we will be registered so they can get an early start on buying us wedding gifts!!!

(I can't believe we are really doing this, it's all happening so fast!!!).

Officially my folks were introduced by a mutual friend at a young adults function at their friend's church. They quickly realized they lived a couple of blocks from each other and used the same laundry mat and saw each other routinely.

My dad was stationed in Germany when my parents were both 19. My mom went to visit her brother who was also stationed there. My mom was saved my dad was not. My dad came to Christ and met my mom the next week at a coffee house( a get together of believers and people they are trying to witness to). My dad saw my mom and he immediately put on the charm( now who is it on CC who claims to have this same charm). The knew each other for a month and got engaged. My mom called her mom and said you have a month to plan a wedding. A month later they were married in NY. Thirty eight years later they are more in love than they ever were.

Makes me wonder at times how I had such a great example, yet I failed!!!
