It is written:
Rev.3

[14] And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
[15] I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
[16] So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Lukewarm...a miserable condition. What say ye that it is?

Inputs from any angle or traditional or nontraditional perspective welcome.

It means, they are on the fence. they have not chosen a side. Good or bad. they don't care. He rather they where one or the other, at least He would know what to do with them. Because they are just luke warm. They will non the less hear from The Almighty all powerful God.

Many years ago(over 30) I came to God and accepted Christ as my Saviour. Though I knew I should give from the heart my whole life to God, I didn't. There was much half heartedness in me. I so often let myself be distracted away from the life I knew I should be living.
When I got in dire messes I cried to God earnestly and he always rescued me, but once my feet were on solid ground I would let myself once again be distracted from the life I knew I should be living

To me that was being lukewarm

If it's interpreted as 'just not caring that much', as in a blend of hot and cold, then why did the Lord Jesus say this?

‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot.'

It doesn't seem that the Lord wishing (wanting) we were 'cold' could mean that cold is not caring enough
and hot is 'really on fire for Jesus', does it?

Revelation 3:16 Since you are lukewarm and neither hot nor cold, I am going to spit you out of my mouth. ... matt:12:30- Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.. in other words you are either living for Christ or your not .... well that's what the bible say's ... God Bless.

I've thought of Lukewarm as being the mixture of hot and cold.

The cold being the one under the law with the heart of stone.

The hot being the one in Christ with the heart of flesh.

The lukewarm being the ones with one foot on either side, not quite 100% believing in Christ but thinking they must be righteous by their own works of the Law.

i think the text explains it:

17 Because thou sayest, I am [SUP]a[/SUP]rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

it reminds me of the man who tore down his barns and built bigger one and took ease.
with the scary ending.

Jeremiah 7:9-10 KJV
(9) Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;
(10) And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?

They worshiped both Baal and God. They were lukewarm a mixture of hot and cold.

It's a state where a Christian or professing Christian in neither cold, as a cold glass of pure water which refreshes the parched body. This coldness however, is speaking of a parched soul. Christians should always be ready to give testimony of the Gospel those who are spiritual thirsty. On the other hand, It is also a state in which a Christian or professing Christian is not hot, hot as in taking a hot bath, a stepping into a hot steamy sauna, which has healing properties to the body. The spiritual connotation I believe has to deal with discipleship, or taking in the broken hearted for healing of the heart and leading them a state of spiritual health. When the hot and cold mix, they create something that is good for nothing, thus if you where given a glass of warm water, you'd spit it out of your mouth for it does not refresh the soul or provide spiritual healing.

IMO, in order to understand what is written here in Rev. 3 and how to apply it to our lives you need to know a little bit about the geographical area of the Laodiceans. Laodicea was located between two cities Hierapolis and Colossae. Colossae was located in a valley that had high mountains over it. It's water supply was refreshing and cold as it came down from the icy streams. Hierapolis in contrast was well known for it's HOT mineral springs and the streams flowed out of the city to the open plains before it entered Laodicea. By the time both streams of hot and cold water reached Laodicea it was lukewarm and awful to drink.

By using these streams, Jesus is actually making a statement regarding the ministry and condition of the church in Laodicea. The Church in Laodicea would have known exactly what Jesus was talking about. The Cold water was good and refreshing, when a person was thirsty, this was the water to give that refreshed the inward condition ofthe parched soul. Thus it was good to be a giver of this type of water. Spiritually speaking, when a man thirsts for God and receives this water, it immediately comforts the inner soul and renews it. The Hot springs in Hierapolis, these hot springs had healing properties and effected the outward man, his body. Both of these are metaphors for a healthy Church and its ministries.

What Jesus is doing here is not judging the Church according to its spiritual temperate, but calling them out on their lack of works. This church was neither refreshing tho those who were spiritually weary or who needed physical healing. Because this church was ineffective, it was distasteful to the Lord. They blended in to the pagan culture just like the cold and hot water blended together that produced lukewarm water, good for nothing. God was calling them out on their lack of witness and works, not their spiritual position in Christ as so many Christians want to mistakenly interpret it.

The application we can draw from this is, once you are born again, it's like being put behind the enemies lines in which we engage spiritual warfare. God wants to be either Very Cold,as in refreshing water to those who are spiritual thirsty, or very Hot to those who suffer from physical conditions. Thus a spiritual application can be made that we are to be concerned with the inner man, spiritual conversion, and the outward man, discipleship--->>>Both lead to a life of Christian transformation and a Christ like/minded person and church as opposed to looking like the environment/culture we find ourselves in.

Very few churches today have a balance of messages that talk about Hell, or sin, or obedience. Most Churches today are all about a feel good, about yourself, hollywood production show to bring in the numbers and money. we need to go to church to get our conscience pricked every now and then to help us stay on the straight and narrow path.

Also, here are two verses in Proverbs 25 that I think fit this passage in Revelation:

[SUP]25 [/SUP]As cold water to a weary soul,
So is good news from a far country.

[SUP]26 [/SUP]A righteous man who falters before the wicked
Is like a murky spring and a polluted well.

Thanks for the replies...I agree on the importance on understanding the waterstreams of Laodicea, some were cold others hot and the lukewarm ones weren't beneficial.

Then there's this connotation to lack of commitment and half-heartedness, which is tricky ground and something to handle with care, because heresies can be ever so sincerely committed to their falsehood, day and night to the core and really be "on fire" for same. Paul said that the unbelieving pharisees were zealous for God but not according to (saving) knowledge. So...commitment might not be the key issue here.

Another thing that is often left out is that Laodicea means rule of the people, i. e. democracy. This might not be mere coincidence but would tell something about the atmosphere of this church and its struggle for the faith. Democracy in combination with wealth (v.17) what kind of threat to faith, spiritual life and respect for God's word might such create...? I am sure this is something really to consider when discerning lukewarmness.

Being luekwarm is mixing grace with works of the law.
You can't mix these 2. It's either hot or cold.

Rom 11:6
And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.

James 3:11
Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

Your post made me think of the parable where talents were given out by the master to three men.
Two , took those talents and increaced them, pleasing the master, thus he gave them more.
The third man, because he was afraid, buried the talent given to him, thus their was no gain or loss.
The master angry with the man, because the he did nothing , took all away and gave it to the others.

God bless

You've NO idea how tempted I was to plagiarize this. lol

I almost sent you a pm to say, 'Hey! hop on over to this thread and say what you did last week.' :D

Thanks again,

I just checked the Greek dictionary for 'laos' and 'diké'. (No, not from Missouri, but...;) )
That was another great add to my understanding of this passage, though.

Adding the wealth idea was good, too, really good.

Thanks,

I know this because someone told me, Isn't most of what we plagiarized. I didn't repeat his words word for word, but still, if it sounds good and right, verify it, then take it and use it to bless others. I really don't want credit for anything I say anyway (lier--->>me...my flesh wants it, my spirit says I don't...I understand exactly want Paul was talking about)...I got this information from Ed Budd on his show "End Times According to The Bible"..I've had the link to his site up for awhile now in my signature. click below...
