I'll admit that Valentine's is not my favorite holiday. I'm single and it was my ex husbands birthday. I always dreamed of a great romantic date for Valentine's Day, but its never happened. Some day it will, but not this year. And...gulp...that's ok. I joke that an alternate name is Single Awareness Day, but the truth is I'm happy for my friends and family who have someone special to share it with. I'm happy that they can be happy and treated well.
For we dateless singles, what is our choice. I believe it is to allow ourselves to be romanced by The Lord. He is our true love. He is the only one who can love us well all the time, and honestly, He's a better date than any man could be for me. Jesus is my true love and I new to remember this. We don't have to dred this day. We need only see it as another chance to really find the love of God for His children.
Its a hard holiday. If you have a single friend, call them. Wish them a happy valentines day. Pray for each other. Write them a note. Show up at their door. Take them to a movie. Just spread the love of Jesus. Don't wallow if you have no one to love you... Go and love on someone else.

I don't think its fair when women talk about Jesus as their true love or their husband. Where does that leave us guys? I mean we can't think of Jesus that way. :(

Please don't take that the wrong way, Jordache. I happen to think highly of you and your opinions.

Oh zero, I know it's an odd concept but Jesus is the guys true love also. God does not become one thing for women and another thing for men altogether. The fact is Jesus is the husband of the church which doesn't exclude men. We have to value Jesus above all else.

As a brother, a mentor, a true friend, the greatest male friendship that you can have~ there is love in that. "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends".

Yes! I agree wholeheartedly, it should not be about us. Everyday belongs to God. There is no good that can come from wallowing in bitterness.

I don't see why guys can't see Jesus as their one true love.

And if anybody wants to crack any gay jokes because of a man seeing Jesus as the love of their life, may God have mercy on their soul.

I know it's hard, even strange, but I don't want to leave the guys out on this one. I don't really know how to fix it, but I do know that all of who Jesus is is for men and women alike. I can imagine to call him your lover would be odd. In a different way we probably all have issues with identifying God by certain characteristics. But He still is those things regardless of how we feel about it because He is good.

I would never call Jesus my lover, simply based on the sexual implications that most associate with that word.

I don't really see it in the Bible.

David never spoke of God in such terms. The Disciples, I can't believe did either.

To me its a fundamental schism is the perception of the Character of Christ and therefore the Character of God.

I guess I see this the same way that I see "The Shack"

Have you read the Song of Solomon? Lover is constantly used. To us lover has a sexual connotation. I wouldn't call Jesus my lover necessarily when speak to someone on the street, but certainly I can consider him my lover amongst my Christian friends or alone. Being a lover does not have to be sexual. We make it sexual. It's about intimacy not sex, and the older I've gotten the more this makes sense to me. A lover is simply someone who loves... But The Lord loves beyond what we can imagine love being. He is THE lover of our souls. He is the epitome of love. He is love incarnate, the embodiment of true affection, and the ultimate pure expression of such love. So why shouldn't we call him lover?

Sorry, I didn't mean to derail your thread. Jesus' presence and God's love is definitely something to remember when we are feeling lonely. Valentine's Day was originally a day for couples to celebrate their love for each other, but now everyone treats it like a national holiday that we're all supposed to honor in some way. Ugh!

I didn't say we shouldn't, I said that I wouldn't. I just know that a majority of people DO associate "lover" with "sex partner".

Believe me, I see nothing wrong with you calling Jesus your lover.

Well, zero, lets use it to honor love in general. It doesn't have to be about romantic love... Though I pride myself in saying I would make a spectacular boyfriend. My friends all agree ;). I could be the best valentine ever. But the point is love and romance.. Not sex! So I'll go romance a few of my friends and allow myself to be romanced by Jesus. No problem with the derailing... It's a discussion and I'm willing to take it wherever it goes. The fact is many people think the same way and I get it. In fact when I was leading worship or a youth group I was asked to change the words to a song that mentioned a lover. I agreed then because I didn't really understand.
In fact there's another song with a strange lyric which I've heard the explanation for. I get it. How he loves has a line about a sloppy wet kiss. Who knows what people are thinking? We could all be thinking about that new godaddy commercial or getting pounced on by an overly friendly Saint Bernard. Who knows? It's an awkward image for some just like the lover image of Jesus.

With that song I finally figured out the best image... Those sloppy wet baby kisses when babies haven't qquite figured out the mechanics. They just open their mouth as wide as possible, twinkle their little eyes, and drool all over you. Best ever!

oh wait! I just derailed my own thread.

Song of Solomon translates the word as "beloved". In Hebrew, it's derived from dvd, not from ahab. It means "be-passioned". Jordache, I know Jesus will be busy seeing all His beloved's tomorrow, but I bet He'll make a special trip for you.

Oh He will Ken... He will. But He doesn't really need to make a trip. He's always here.

Well Why cant guys think of Jesus as our beloved? We are all the bride of Christ if were saved . John was the disciple thatt Jesus Loved the one who leaned upon his breast at the last supper :)

Yes, we do make it imply a sexual connotation. The whole world around us does. And because of that i'm in agreement its not an appropriate statement. It does not matter what the word 'used to mean', it matters what the word means now, and most people will see it with the sexual connotation.
People today always want to use words out of context of their current usage and apply their own definition to the word. Unfortunately, no matter how well intended you are, the fact of the matter is a word has a mean, or implication and its not wise to just decide to change the meaning to suit your own desires. If you say lover, people take it sexually. That's just the way the word functions now and trying to use it differently won't change what millions of others think.

A real husband gives his sweetie something special for V-Day, right? That's what I'm believing for in your case.
