Fortunately, I missed Church last week. Our bible study class was ran by a young college student and an older man who I think he thinks that people can be saved outside of Christ (Muslims, Buddhists, etc.) who apparently support a form of postmodernism. There was a few flair ups, especially about homosexuals and if they should be allowed in the church, and among other things. What are your thoughts about Postmodernism and it's effect on the church.

Here is a good like I found that explains it quit well I think:

The Emerging Church and Postmodernism | emerging church | relativism | Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry

in some ways postmodernism is an improvement on the rationalism and philosophical materialism of modernism...

in other ways it is just as bad but on the opposite extreme...

both have done damage to the church in their own ways...but both approaches can also be applied to the benefit of the church...

how does postmodernism 'applied' benefit the Church that Scripture doesn't already cover?

Postmodernism has been difficult to define because it has many faces and many degrees. For the purpose of theology, it's focus is primarily the domain of epistemology. Postmodernism is in part a rejection of the epistemology of the Enlightenment and a rejection of approaches that are positivist, rationalistic, exclusive, and certain.

Yet postmodernism has many degrees. In the first half of the last century, avant-garde thinkers argued, with great persuasiveness, that for finite human beings there can be no uninterpreted facts. In the second half of the 20th century, many extrapolated this argument to conclude that there are no facts, only interpretations. The latter is toxic insisting that we are confined to a quagmire of relativity, that all meaning is merely a result of linguistic markers that occurred in neo-Darwinism, and that there is no (e.g. zero) possibility of any objective truth.

How am I doing so far Rachel?

the benefit has mainly just come from postmodernism contradicting the ability of modernism to make truth claims...making 'science' a little bit less authoritative...

Hmm. I see Revelation as God's way, reason and the 'scientific method as one step removed and Postmodernism as two steps removed thus having no improvement on the first two.

What are you saying, I should leave the bible study, or the Church (I've been thinking about that for a long time now, but also for other reasons). This Church isn't there yet, in postmodernism, but I really don't want to have this debate in Church.

Yes, I agree, we have a mixture of conservatism and liberalism in the Church, is this a bad thing or a good think, some may say it provides balance.

i would Bookends.
the fact it's even allowed inside means there's a breach, and the walls will (not maybe) will come down.
i'd find a new church for sure.

mind if I ask what church it is? we have a gay church here in Columbus (I can't remember if it is Lutheran or Methodist) Our church has classes, and one of them wants you to visit a few churches just to see what others do. My wife and her friend went there, they freaked out. A Gay clergy, Couples sitting and they even during service brought a Gay couple up for some ceremony..

I do not know how people can read Gods word and say God would even say this is OK. Especially in his Church!

It's Mennonite, but really we are a group of various back grounds, only a few card holding Mennonites, but enough to get their themes across. I actually gave a few sermons here, one in which I attempted to explain to them how God hates, lol...Gotta love it...
