I was reading a thread in the forums embroiled in tremendous controversy. Some people were responding with truth and correction, but some people were just making it worse. I don't get that. Aren't we supposed to "seek peace and pursue it" (Psalm 34)???

Why does it seem like arguing is a form of entertainment for some people? What causes this? How do we reconcile it with our walk with Christ?

People are argumentative for lots of reasons. Most of the time it's because they just want to be right. Personally, I think we all have god complexes and immortality issues. We've been made in the image of God, so that sinfully creates a I'm-always-right-and-you're-wrong mentality. In regards to immortality, we tend to think we're immortal because we are. Our souls are immortal and that creates a huge sense of I'm-going-to-duke-this-out-to-the-end nonsense. There is a need to have a pecking order in human nature. Arguing is a way of setting that up. Did you ever see The Passion of the Christ? There is a scene where Christ is being beaten with the cat of nine tails and Satan starts to walk through the crowd. He's watching and taunting Christ, of course, However, as he does, the crowd becomes more worked up and the group mentality of "destroy him" becomes all the stronger. There have been times while I've read through some of the threads and thought that Christ wasn't be glorified or His children weren't being discipled, but instead our fleshly need of being our own god was being fed.

ur both wrong lets fight!! jk i love u both ;) i agree, and you know what people just need to take emotions out of stuff sometimes

Matt 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

I personally think that a lot of people get off on arguments, seeing how they can manipulate emotions and get a rise out of people, especially people who are supposed to be loving and slow to anger. I don't get it either but I know that it does not come from the Holy Spirit. This sort of thing should have no place among followers of Christ. The reconciliation comes in one word, LOVE.

And there's aimee being logical and studious as always

My response would have been less eloquently written, but pretty much the same. People get extremely passionate about certain issues, and would rather claim ignorance and believe their right than be open and swallow their ego (as if being ignorant is somehow worth more than knowing the truth, hmm interesting theology there). It's like a lot of convictions people have in relation to the bible, beliefs on end times what is biblical, and what isn't, a lot of people have their minds made up on these issues already, and refuse to hear any argument to the alternative (I'm just as guilty as anyone else). I find it good to read the bible with an open and flexible mind. We can always come across something we never noticed that can shatter what we were so convicted of.

When I first came to the forum in 2009, I held back a lot of times when I disagreed with something. Not all the time, but I was much more meager and catering.

As I've gotten older... I do want God to be glorified. But, I'm a bit stronger in stating my case on topics I feel strongly about such as race, abusive relationships, etc.

There are times I feel convicted for saying something too strongly... and other times I feel convicted for not saying anything at all. I am hoping God will continue to teach me when to do what.

I'm a bit surprised at the divisiveness and argumentative nature some posters have shown. I understand not everyone will agree, but you would think that Christians would be a bit more loving in how they debate. I just find it funny how you will have one group use scripture that supports their theory and then another group that uses scripture that supports their theory which is the opposite of the first group. Then, you just have a debate that goes round and round with no clear conclusion that eventually leads to doubt, fear, and who knows what else to those who are trying to get to the root of the issue.

For every verse you can post about peace, I could post one about violence.

"For the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force."

There should be peace when believers are unified in true doctrine. If somebody is believing or propagating false doctrine or leading somebody astray, should the others meekly go along in the name of "peace"?

This thread is just emblematic of the erroneous spirit in America that says we should all get along for the sake of getting along. There is a time for everything, a time for peace and a time for war. Or did you miss that verse too?

It's because some people like to argue, and they'll find scriptures or moments in history that justify their decisions to argue.

Can't fight the peoples right to fight...or you'll already be sucked in yourself.

I believe this thread is more about arguing as a way to entertain oneself or arguing for the sake of arguing or to antagonize others. If a person does believe that a false doctrine shouldn't be rebuked, then that person needs rebuking themself.

The fine line between correcting/rebuking and fighting?

I'd say if you find yourself repeating yourself over 6 times, chances are you're just fightin.

If someone is dug into their trench, you can repeat youself a guzillion times. They still aren't going to change. At that point it's more about fightin and showin you're right, than it is about correction. Because if someone is shown correction a few times, and they aren't changin, then it's a sign they aren't wanting to change. At which point it's wise for the one doing the correcting to just move on and not waste their time.

Like a wise red head once pointed out....

Sometimes people confuse iron sharpening iron with taking a sharp ax and beheading people. <---My paraphrase of said wise red head.

As others have stated there are many reasons that people are argumentative. Lately, I have found that people tend to argue a lot when they are feeling convicted, which happens when the truth is being shared. This is easier to see off the computer, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens in here as well.

I feel it's truly important to share the truth regardless of what the outcome is going to be, but often times it is counterproductive to repeat yourself and feed into such arguments. Try to hear the Lord's leading in how to respond to people.

I'm not sure what thread you are referring to, but if it's this one, rest assured that I will be among the first to stand for truth and righteousness, but in a way that is led by the Spirit of God, not by the use of mockery or intentionally vindictive provocative means. But you are new here and could not have known this. :)

So true, unfortunately...conviction leads to aggressively defensive behavior quickly, doesn't it?

Yeah, I kinda just wanted to argue for the sake of arguing. :)

The problem is people like to defend themselves.
No one is willing to be corrected.
Debate is reasonable, arguments are not.
The general tactic a person uses who wants to defend themself without scripture is to narrow down to a certain minutia, and argue from that point. Thinking it will cause the whole of the opposition to crumble.
The only mistake the side using scripture makes is to entertain that divergent thought, instead of sticking to what the scripture states.
Much like answering the snake in the garden, who asserted; ........"hath God said?"

I'll just ignore someone if they wanna argue about something needlessly. If I got a point to make I'll make it then abandon the convo. If your talking to the type of person that likes to argue, then the only one that's having any fun is the other person. Lame

i loves me a good keyboard fistiecuff. so long as everybody has a sence of humour anything goes. sometimes the truth has to be said
