Arwen, here's another thing to keep in mind, guitar size. A lot of us women do not do as well with a full size guitar, simply because are hands are not as big as a man's. You might look into getting a 3/4.

I agree, arewenning--and, did you know that one of the 14 dwarfs in LOTR is named, 'arewenning?'

ha, ha, got ya, but I would get a guitar, not some expensive guitar either, I'm not sure if you are wanting acoustic or electric, sorry, if I missed that, my green ears, gotta blame them :D , but I agree, a DSLR you probably want to go 'new' with, there can be a lot wrong that you just won't see from buying used unless you buy from a camera store with a 30 day warranty, then, I would think different. I would def say no to craigslist or newspaper ad buying of that kind of item. Now, a guitar is different. I think that its going to sound good pretty much no matter what and you can get one of those less expensive, as even a used D-SLR is going to run you around $350, I think, and, Olympus actually makes a pretty good low line D-SLR, I've had one, it was a good option to the more expensive CAnon and Nikons out there.

But, as I was saying, besides giving some as a donation ;) , I think that getting a gee-tar and a camera is doable, because guitars are a dime a dozen, even fenders . I've got a nice electric Fender amp a time or two, and, I think FEnder guitar too, once, (I buy and sell things) for $100 at auctions a time or two and I've bought acoustic to from auctions. Not sure what you have for auctions out there but for the guitar that is an inexpensive route to go , methinks. Never fully trust green brains. ,--- Full disclosure :D

OK, green has spoken :D The Lord leads, milady, don;'t you dare do this without Him leading you. It will turn out GREAT if you let Him know what you want to do and He will best do it. He knows YOU better than anyone else knows you, including you. Afterall, He made you.

Oh, one last thing, read through Consumer Reports magazine, or, online, and see what they say about D-SLR cameras and also what do they say, maybe, about guitars, they may rate them too. And, other online places may give good reviews too, like CNET.com does reviews of things and epinions.com .

Ephesians 2:10 -- "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."

Very good consideration, the website has 3/4 ones. I don't know how good they are. I'm going down there tomorrow to check them out.

Since you're getting the guitar and its your first one you might consider getting a second hand one since it can save you a lot of money without compromising quality or sound (maybe just some cosmetic issues).

If you're considering buying used and don't know a lot about guitar construction consider buying from a reputable music store since they are less likely to carry seriously damaged/weakened instruments. My guitar was purchased used and I've had it now for 30 years. A well constructed/well cared for instrument will last multiple lifetimes.

Guitars are the musical device that men buy to sandblast, throw around like a frisbee, and play american gladiator with in their down time. So when the one and only time a FEMALE comes into their room they go "OH WOW! You own a guitar, can you play it?" At that point the man goes, "well it needs a new bridge and to be restrung. I played it too much when I was in high school and now that I'm focused on higher priorities and looking to excel at my career... It doesn't allow me time to play it anymore so it just sits there."

I say camera. Then you could do those cool facebook pictures of yourself in the mirror making pouty face, but with a REAL camera, not your iphone. =D

OK, no, seriously, i haven't finished reading this thread, so maybe its too late, but i say camera. The way you talked about the camera sounded like it was something you had a real interest in. And something tells me you would have a natural knack for photos more than music. And find more enjoyment in it. Everybody and their mother plays guitar and has youtube videos up. Gets old. But photography is more unique, to me, at least. And is a more varied type of medium to express yourself.
Personally, i'd be interested to see what you would do with a camera.

O.K I'm going with the guitar. 10 votes for it and the camera I've been eying is $100 more than I have, so it will have to wait. In the meantime, there is always Instagram....right Ugly? :P

Man, if its this hard picking what I should buy, imagine what kind of place I would be in if a guy asked me to marry him. Him: "Arwen, will you marry me?", Me: "Hm...I'll get back to you on that in 3 days, I have to make a poll on CC"

Reasons Why Arwen Should Not Get Married #8

I am always pro-saving. If you don't have anything put back, I think it is important to. If you have some put back, then reward yourself.

I am also pro music. If you love music and playing it makes you happy, then go for it. :)

DSLR... Totally... and I jealous you can afford one!!!! Hey if you don't like it...sent it to MEEEEEEE! :o

The one I was looking at is used and asking for 300. A canon eos rebel. I decided not to buy either guitar or camera and went out for sushi instead. I do want a DSLR but I think I'll wait until I can buy one of better quality. I swear I am horrible at making decisions lol *face-palm* Thanks for all your contributions lol

I think you made an excellent decision (except for maybe the sushi part.) It's a much wiser choice to wait until you know for sure what all is involved.

If you know someone who has an acoustic guitar maybe you can borrow it and learn on it for now and then decide if playing guitar is really for you. I tried to learn on my friends guitar once and my fingers just felt really strained and the metal strings hurt my fingertips beacuse you have to press the string down hard with your fingertips on the thin metal bars along the neck while strumming. I don't know how others manage to get past the pain. :p

It's called callouses. And maybe you should try a 3/4 as well.

It's true, the first few weeks of playing guitar sucks. Your fingers get really sore. Once your fingers are calloused though, it's not bad. To get past it is pure determination and just gritting your teeth while you play. :P

try classical... the nylon stings might hurt less. besides, if someone one can play "mountain music" on a 300 year old Italian "fiddle," then who is to complain about a little blues shuffle on a modern classical guitar.

Sharing others pictures, that some stranger took? No, not the same thing =P

It's not a 300 year Italian fiddle but a 13 year old German violin. Oh, wait, you weren't meaning me were you.
