So, since this thread is dedicated to Christian metal, I would like some recommendations, if anyone can give me any?
Are there any bands similar to Opeth? I have heard of Morphia; good band, any others?

How about technical bands? Or progressive bands? I am aware of Becoming the Archetype and I Built the Cross. Any others?

Just something that sounds unique?

Please don't listen the known bands, I already know them all. Thanks!
Opeth is a pretty unique band, even in secular circles. Not many bands come near that sound. I've heard a Christian band or two mentioned as being vaguely similar, but nothing real close.

Technical... have you tried Sympathy - Abyssal Throne/Anagogic Tyranny/Arcane Path/Invocation? Brutal Tech DM.
Dues Invictus - Staged In Waiting had a tech sound, to me.
Old school Embodyment - Embrace The Eternal.
thrash/power/techish - Teramaze - Anhedonia/Doxology/Tears To Dust. The had one called 'I'm Not The Criminal', but it was horrid, poppish sounding, confused, and wretched. Avoid at all costs.

Its tricky to give much because 'known bands' varies from each person. Some people think Sympathy is 'known' while others think of them as more underground. And you're young so we have no idea what you know about bands out when we were your age.

Unique .. Nephesh - Hated By This World/Inter Armas Silent Leges. Black metal based, but have this symphonic almost movie soundtrack sound mixed in.
Diamoth - Distorktion.. self proclaimed 'black'n'roll'
O' Majestic Winter - Defiling The Serpents Temple .. Song i have on started out with a repetitive horn call, and a slow paced break down with death/black vocals, then busts into raw black. Kind of weird.
Ceremonial Sacred - Our War Is Only Against Hell .. some good black metal, but they throw in some quite non-black metal elements. Such as 'My Dead Feelings', a 2 minute piano track, that sounds kind of lounge act almost at first, or Snoopy sounding haha, but gets a little darker at the end. Don't know why its all black metal so far. Then in another song it closes with a mellow jazz sax, then goes into piano.
Old school thrash/death band called Decision D, they seemed to have some weird stuff, lots of differing vocals and whatnot.
Old school thrash/industiral/metal, Screams Of Chaos - Genetic Warfare
If you want a bizarre mix of King Diamond/thrash/death/power go for old school Possession - Eternally Haunt/Scourge And Fire/The Unnameable Suffering.

Some of this old stuff may be hard to find.
Problem with finding specialty sounds like 'tech' stuff, or anything real unique is during the big push of Christian metal, a lot of that stuff wasn't prevalent, even in the secular. As the scenes died out, they began being more experimental (purging the trendy types so the real musicians can take over again). But by the Christian music had also moved on and left a small remnant behind of true metallers. Now, so much of the music comes from South America, which puts out good music, but not a lot of original or ultra-talented music.

Crimson Moonlight is soooo good. I really like the guys vocals, he doesn't just stick with one pitch most of the time like a lot of unblack vocalists, he goes all over the place, and sounds wicked awesome. I need me to download soon.
Lets see, i got in some Rotting Serpent, Divine Symphany and Poems Of Shadows as well, before i had to go. That's the most BM i've listened to in one day than i think i ever have, haha.

Don't worry Zman, its not just a feeling. hahahaha .. kidding =P

I'm not surprised you haven't heard of Rotting Serpent. But Divine Symphony i am. Poems of Shadows, eh, could go either way. Don't think they've done anything in years.

Okay, I'm a musician and a new Christian and I also like metal music so I wanted to check out some of the bands you guys were talking about. Ummm question: how do you understand the song? Most of it is like screaming nonsense that I would need to look up the lyrics for. I guess it's convenient if you forget your lyrics...who would know at a show? Just curious as to why there seems to be a trend to growl/scream unintelligible things. I used to like Pantera and even know Phil could scream and yell you could still understand him. Man, maybe I'm just getting old I don't know..

Some vocalists are definitely easier to understand than others. I've been listening to it for years, I'm so used to it that understanding the lyrics is just becoming second nature for me, if nothing else I look them up online. If you listen to The Crucified, that's some good early 90's thrashy christian metal, and not difficult to understand either. They even toured with Pantera at one point.

This is really nothing new at all. Thrash came out in early 80s.. death metal a few years later. Hardcore has been around since early 80s and punk since the 70s. All these styles had scream/yell/growl.. some easier to understand and some hard to understand.

If you're into metal what kind? Maybe we can point you to bands more your style.

By the way I'm only three years older than you and i listen to all that 'screaming/growling' stuff still.

For progressive for sure listen to Extol if you don't already. Particularly the Burial and Undeceived albums, also check out Mantric, and if you're ok with the power metal style (i.e. Iron Maiden) check out Theocracy. I haven't listened to much Opeth, though what I hear I like, I don't really know of any bands similar sounding.
Know all those bands LOL

Sympathy is good as well as Deus Invictus! actually hear DI once, but wasn't actually listening that one day obviously. Thank you. Will check out the others.

Can anyone name all of Extol's sideprojects?

Bands that I know that are common for my age*-

August Burns Red, the Devil Wears Prada, Becoming the Archetype, Extol, For today, In the Midst of Lions, you get the idea....

The only extol side project I know of is Lengsel. I guess Mantric could be, but the three members who were in extol weren't original members and aren't in the line up anymore.
