For some with susceptibility in the areas of lust, the inspiration of the artist may not matter, they would still need to avoid it. I have to discipline myself to look at these works of art in the right way to avoid allowing my mind to go where it shouldn't, regardless. My experience with some European artist from the 1600 thru 1800's is that they were painting to capture & convey a sensuality & even an unapologetic (though subtle) lewdness in there work, of course this would appeal to many.
The "lust of the eyes" isn't just about our sexuality, it can be any overemphasis on allowing our hearts to be overtaken with beauty of any kind. God has dealt with my heart about complimenting females of all ages on there good looks. It may seem innocent, but I learned I was deceiving myself. A large percentage of men are to easily taken captive by a pretty face. Women are not altogether affected either.
