This subforum is for any cooking/household/cleaning tips you might want to share/discuss.

Here are a few cooking tips --
1. Add a pinch of baking soda, to brewed tea, to take out the bitterness of the tea.
2. To keep peeled apples from browning, use sprite or 7up!
3. To rid garlic/onion smell on fingers - rub wet hands on stainless steel sink.
4. Peeling hard boiled eggs--Boil them with a tablespoon of vegetable oil. When it's time to peel they slide right off. Reasoning is the shells are porous and they absorb the oil which makes a layer between the shell and the boiled egg.
5. For camping adventures, you can freeze raw eggs, just not in shell.
6. Don't store onions where you store your potatoes.

p.s. I also read this week.....if you don't use the whole onion, don't keep in frig for later use; its toxic--throw any unused onion out.
Also read that eating asparagus--helps those who are fighting cancer.

My mom used peanut butter to get gum out of my hair when I was a kid. I didn't think it would work, but it does

Sprinkling baking soda on a damp stainless steel kitchen sink to clean it will make is super shiny, and take out stains.

Also, hand sanitizer takes the gooey lables off picture frames amd mirrors etc.

My car was wrecked 2 years ago and had sit ever since with a busted window. Now, I've had the car repaired but there is a horrible Mildew Odor in it. The passenger's side floorboard had quite a bit of water accumulated in it and I also believe the water ran down in the dashboard seeing how it was the FRONT windshield that was broken by airbags. Does ANYONE have any tips or tricks for removing this awfully strong odor of mildew?

The best way to remove crayon from walls and such is with a light oil.

Here's another helpful ideal I read about today.....to keep flies away....
We went out for breakfast, and we sat in the enclosed patio section. We happened to notice a couple of zip lock baggies pinned to a post and a wall. The bags were half filled with water, each contained 4 pennies, and they were zipped shut. Naturally we were curious! A lady told us that these baggies kept the flies away! So naturally we were even more curious! We actually watched some flies come in the open window, stand around on the window sill, and then fly out again. And there were no flies in the eating area!
Regarding the science behind zip log bags of water? Research found that each of the millions of molecules of water presents its own prism effect and given that flies have a lot of eyes, to them it's like a zillion disco balls reflecting light, colors and movement in a dizzying manner. When you figure that flies are basically prey for many other bugs, animals, birds, etc., they simply won't take the risk of being around that much perceived action.

cool

Lemon juice will also remove bad smell from hands, and it is said that a scoped-out lemon with salt in it will remove the smell from your refridgerator if you leave it in there for a while. (havent tested that one yet though).

Ketchup will remove rust/ discoloring from coins (scary stuff that is).

..and remember the TV- shop metal plates that would make silver look nice again? - Same thing can be done with aluminum foil and salt (put in bottom of sink, fill with warm water and put in your stuff).

How do you make cats eat catfood they don't like until you can get something better?

I guess the only way is to not feed them anything else. Of course, with cats: it's always the war of the wills.
My cats were sooooo stubborn. And for some reason, I always seemed to adopt the most spoiled rotten cats around. Go figure.

cats just act like that. Mine (at my parents house) can eat virtually nothing for a month or more, and then suddenly, when we change the fodder (it is diet, isnce he is castrated) he suddenly wants food all day. *grrr :p*
