The words of one of 12 that contribute to further divisiveness when unity is needed. And the Biblical injunction John 17:9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

There is also admonition to pray that we are protected by these officials and possibly looking at the Amish communities will give the best perspective on how well this has worked under various administrations. But they too are subject to whims and caprice of circumstances some of which were not adequately anticipated; I am thinking of population growth for one which has impacted many nations and some more radically.

Why should we take words which were aimed at a totally different subject in a different era and apply them today? Best to look into the source and significance and any praying would be better left to individuals as there are radical differences in opportunities and accessibility often determined by geography. Below is just one example of a 'prayer' of the 12 which seems inappropriate for candidates today as they are in no position at this time to be tyrannical with checks and balances still in play. Consumers possibly have more influence but our lives of comfort does not look to sacrifice as meaningful or desirable which even recent conditions

in some western nations resorted to in times of true peril at which point we are not but consumerism is still a potential tool. Great Britain WWii for one, which ironically, is in a way the addressee of the 'prayer' below did resort to sacrifice and of course all know history and the implications. If there is any tyranny a Christian should be concerned with it is of a far more malignant and insidious nature. Consider also Ben Franklin is almost certainly a 'deist' at best.

1) “Lord, I come before You to humbly ask to illuminate our nation’s political understanding. In the beginning, You protected our Founding Fathers and their families as they stood against tyranny. Now I am asking You to protect every voter and every political candidate who is standing up against tyranny in these times. Your will be done in these elections.” –Inspired by Benjamin Franklin’s speech on the first day of the Constitutional Convention, asking for “the assistance of Heaven” to help the 55 delegates write the Constitution (John 1:9).

True and False Worship ........Isaiah 58

1“Shout with the voice of a trumpet blast.

Shout aloud! Don’t be timid.
Tell my people Israela of their sins!

2Yet they act so pious!

They come to the Temple every day
and seem delighted to learn all about me.

They act like a righteous nation
that would never abandon the laws of its God.

They ask me to take action on their behalf,
pretending they want to be near me.

3‘We have fasted before you!’ they say.
‘Why aren’t you impressed?

We have been very hard on ourselves,
and you don’t even notice it!’

“I will tell you why!” I respond.
“It’s because you are fasting to please yourselves.

Even while you fast,
you keep oppressing your workers.

4What good is fasting
when you keep on fighting and quarreling?

This kind of fasting
will never get you anywhere with me.

5You humble yourselves
by going through the motions of penance,

bowing your heads
like reeds bending in the wind.

You dress in burlap
and cover yourselves with ashes.

Is this what you call fasting?
Do you really think this will please the LORD?
