When my siblings and I were first placed in foster care, we grieved to be back with our biological mother and older siblings. We would sometimes cry as we walked to our new school. A crossing guard began to meet us each day at one corner of the school block. She had golden blond hair, almost white and was fair skinned and tall. Her smile was so friendly! She held her arms open and greeted us with a hug and a kiss on the top of our heads. She comforted us when we were crying and also made us laugh with silly kids' jokes. We looked forward to seeing her every day before school and loved her so much!

The weird thing was, there were no other crossing guards on the other three corners of the school block and no other children seemed to pay any attention to her. Just my brothers, my sister and I. And on my last day at that elementary school she hugged me and told me she would always be close by in spirit and that she loved me. She said I’d see her again someday.

Years later, I decided to call the public school system and get her contact information so I could thank her for being so wonderful to us kids. When I told the office administrator that the crossing guard's name was Dolores Shiloh and what corner she stood on, she seemed surprised. She said no guard was ever assigned there. But she promised she'd look into it further and get back with me.

I received a letter not too long after (which I still have in my possession) informing me that nobody named Dolores Shiloh ever worked as a crossing guard for the public school system and that there were never guards posted on any corner of the school block. I told my sister and brothers and they were as shocked as I was! We certainly saw her on a daily basis for all the years we attended that school. It was just way too weird!

I looked up the meaning of her name one day and discovered that Dolores means "sorrows" and Shiloh means "peace. So I guess if it was an angel, she helped bear our grief and gave us peace in our hearts. If she was not an angel, why didn't the other kids see her? And why would she come to work every day wearing a crossing guard hat and greeting my siblings and me? I believe she was an angel.
