well, now I am attempting to make a program find a string in a file, and print any IPs on the same line

that would have been useful if I could make it work :p

if you ever have users log onto your server you can search for failed log- in attempts and see if the same IP fails repeatedly... - would indicate hacking

Free is relative. You have to pay for the OS anyway :p

not necessarily difficult to use

it's good for scripting, obviously , and is "lighter" than windows, so it don't have thousends of nonsense processes doing nothing :p
