My nephew would like to bring attention to bad music. He hears alot of it on the radio on the school bus. Swear words, sexual themes, even the demonic. What advice can you give on how to handle this. It's one of his friends and it is the only music his friend will listen to. How can my nephew encourage him to stop and also not have the bus driver allow it. The bus driver is also a Christian.

Well, if his friend isn't a Christian then there is nothing he can do about it. A Christian should not expect a non-Christian to maintain any values or morals of a Christian. Reality is this is the kind of music that is all over and nothing can be done about it. This is part of living in the world we live in. This is to be expected and ideally a child should be taught how to cope with these things because there's not going to be a lot of changing non-Christians values. They're going to play whats popular. Your nephew is going to be in the minority.
It is not the bus drivers responsibility to monitor what music is played, either. Unless, perhaps, the music was blatantly hateful, etc... but just whatever popular secular music is played isn't really the bus drivers responsibility.

I would suggest to load up his iPod, Walkman, laptop, computer, cd's with fun positive music. It sounds hard but it's not, just search through songs and play them. The songs he likes download them or buy them. That way wherever he goes he can listen to them and possibly attrack other kids to the songs. In regards to the bus driver ??????... Someone needs to have a word with him, a adult, a bunch of adults or his boss (because of a certain complaint) ??????

Are there any Christian Rock Groups that you nephew can suggest? Is the bus driver aware of the type of music your nephew's friend is listening to? When the children get on the school bus, they are under the rules of the school. If the school does not allow that type of music, it is not allowed on the bus either (at least, that is how the school I teach at works). Lastly, is he listening to the music wearing headphones or ear buds? If the latter is the case, and others don't hear his music, the bus driver won't be able to do anything. How old is your nephew's friend? Would speaking to his parents do any good? A lot of parents are not aware of the kind of music their children are listening to and are shocked when they find out.

This is a tough trial for your nephew. I hope he stays true to God and can come to a resolution about this without offending his friend.

But if it is a radio station that he has to play then try to gather some parents to speak to his boss about what radio channel could be suitable.

Those are some good points. I would like to add that the parents have a huge influence on what their child listens to and sometimes do not realize it. If you are driving your kid to practice or something and you are playing a radio station full blast that is not positive and singing the words on top of it, then he will do the same maybe even worse.

If it's a public school bus there's no way the bus driver would get away with playing Christian music.

The big issue here is that the OP is not clear on the details. Is this music played ovrehead on the bus? Or the friend bringing his own player with speaks. Clarifying the situation will play a bit into the answer. But really, the most likely scenario is that nothing can be done about it. This is the music that is accepted among the secular masses for their children.

Hi Charlene, good post! and very appropriate I these times.
Simple answer...there is none :(
However...Myself and my son only a few years ago did not really give this subject a thought and as it happens neither of us really thought much about Christianity either. Anyway to cut a very long story short, I stumbled upon researching the music industry, and was horrified how it was run, its agenda, symbolism and why it went on. You will find if you do this yourself that Satanism has a big part to play in todays music culture, some open and up front and some is very subliminal which I believe can be even more mis-guiding.
I think you can only hope, pray and educate that someone of this mind set can change. To educate some one, it might be worth sending someone relevant videos links explaining the songs meaning and intent which can be readily found on Youtube and the likes.
I have done this with family and some work colleagues to some degree of success, awareness of the subject has grown and attitudes changed.
Hope this helps and may God be with you.
Regards

I agree, Ugly. Clarification will make it easier for us to understand the entire situation. Though I can't see how this type of music would be played on an overhead speaker in the bus. If there is swearing in the songs, it should not be allowed on a school bus--just like swearing is not allowed in school. Just my humble opinion.

Well, i can totally see it happening. Music like that is the norm, mainstream stuff. And that's what schools tolerate. I remember hearing mainstream radio on the bus in school.

Things sure have changed. We did not have music on buses when I was in school. We all had our trusty Walkman to listen to:) Yes, I am showing my age:cool:

This. At the previous gym where I was a member, their music was THE WORST about this. Really bad. But I got a solid .mp3 player and loaded it with Audio Adrenaline, DC Talk, classic Third Day, PfR, and Newsboys tracks. Plug up the ears, and cover that garbage up.

Funny how God would look out for me - I was a member of that gym for two years, and twice I forgot my .mp3 player. Both times were the only times I walked in and they were blasting something sexual or profane. Instead, it was lyric-less house and electronica. But every time I brought my music, there was junk to cover up. Go figure. ^_^

The gym I'm at now plays it's music at a tolerable volume, and it's so rarely profane or provocative that it's no longer an issue.

if he is not able to use his own music player... one thing i would suggest is a daily prayer asking God to filter out anything that this music is inputing in his mind that is not Godly.. this prob sounds a little corny but i do feel that if it is genuine that GOd will honour such a request, and i know myself no matter how much you try to not have any of these ungodly things in your life , it gets hard.. Not only the things you know about it is even the things you might even be aware of... anyway hope you hear my heart here and forgive my babbling

I listen to metal but I listen to good metal.
Metal can be bad at most of the time depends on the lyrics.
Black Metal considers Satanic evilness, they wear a upside down cross necklance.
most ppl thinks the upside down cross means they hate God but someone told me that its the meaning of Catholics.

at best you could maybe have the school or driver force him to get headphones thats really about it. Its not up to you to police the music choices of kids not your own

Thank you. I cannot believe the bus driver is allowing that music to be played. I would either have your nephew play his own music and wear earphones or ear buds or ask his friend to turn his music down because it is offensive. I know it is hard for kids these days to against the norm but, your nephew should not have to listen to music that he finds offensive. I wish I had better advice. If this were happening at my school, the principal would make the student turn off the offensive music.

My prayers are with you and your nephew.

This is a great post and great advice here.

I worry about my little cousin in school. Of course he listens to what his friends listen to. When he shows me his music I just say I don't really like them much. I say the lyrics are a turn off and that I prefer something more positive. I hope I'm influencing him by doing this. How could I not? I am the oldest, coolest cousin there is. :D
