On June 1st a couple of friends and I decided to go swimming at a spot I had never even heard of Blue hole, in Georgetown, Texas. It is at the crossroads of 3rd and Rock near downtown. An hour after we got there a man approached us with a cake "ya'll look like you could use some cake" Of course we accepted, he said it was a cake for a baptism they had just performed. I asked did you do the baptizing? "yes" will you baptize me? "absolutely." So then within 10 minutes I was in a river facing his church members sharing a short testimony and was baptized. As a child I was baptized but I had never done it when it was my decision. It was awesome. I've always wanted to be baptized in a river.

Yes but have you had hands laid on you for the baptism of the Holy Spirit before? :)

happy birthday!!

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,
he is a new creation;
old things have passed away;
behold, all things have become new.

wait, I did go to a church and they laid hands on me and then coaxed me into speaking in tongues.. It didn't work and they got mad at me for not trying, I started moving my mouth and mimicking their noises and they began praising God. I never returned..

lol that sounds similar to Acts 19 where it says Paul went to the believers in Ephesus who had been baptised Johns baptism of repentance but had never even heard there was a Holy Spirit so Paul laid hands on them and they recieved the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues and prophesied.
I hope you would consider this someday.

Not surprised by this account..............happens far too often...........HOWEVER............there IS BIBLICAL truth in having elders or other sanctified believers lay on hands and pray for you to receive the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. No, not everyone bursts out speaking in foreign languages.........NOR are they suppose to..........that is NOT BIBLICAL...........

Doesn't mean speaking in tongues/foreign languages is not a GIFT of the Holy Spirit, simply means IT IS NOT proof of salvation or receiving the Holy Spirit............

Sanctified simply means one as received the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit..........this CAN HAPPEN at the time one is saved..............or later depending on ones situation/chain of events....................

You should seek a different church.............maybe the one that witnessed your baptism............and have them pray over you......they sound like they are not like the one you described above.........

.......as I understand it..........so DON'T QUOTE ME on this...........but, as I understand it...........

TRY THIS:

stand up, raise your hands above your head, close your eyes, begin to sway back and forth faster and faster, and REPEAT AGAIN AND AGAIN these words..........

"the keys to my Honda, the keys to my Honda, the keys to my Honda........."

AND PRESTO! do it long enough, fast enough, and before you know it...........you will be speaking unintelligible noises that some refer to as "tongues."

I spoke to the pastor of the church and he said this

We believe that a person receives the Holy Spirit the moment they place their trust in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:13 says "And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit," It is the Holy Spirit who, first convicts of our sin and need for a Savior, then once we believe the Spirit empowers and enables us to be obedient to God. We do not believe speaking in tongues is a part of this process or necessary for salvation.

That's referring to Salvation.........Sanctification is the 2nd Work of the Holy Spirit....... :) (just saying)

There are many instances of this in Acts.............receiving the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit comes by the "laying on of hands and praying over.........."

NOW...........this SURELY can happen at the same time of our new birth..........salvation.......BECAUSE.........as an example:

In my church, when someone is convicted by the Holy Spirit and makes their way to the alter, kneels down and begins to pray for God to forgive them.........(usually crying).........two or more of the elder believers in our congregation will go down to that person, gather around him/her, lay hands on them and begin to pray for them.........

So, yes, it can occur at the same time............but that doesn't count for the soul who is out in the world somewhere who experiences a "come to Jesus" moment........... :)

Help me to understand brother. Show me more scripture if you can so I can figure out the difference. After corresponding with the pastor I reread Acts 19 and it appears that their first baptism wasn't in the name of Jesus Christ and that was what they had been lacking. Correct me if I am wrong.

[SUP]2 [/SUP]He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
[SUP]3 [/SUP]And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.

[SUP]4 [/SUP]Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

[SUP]5 [/SUP]When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

[SUP]6 [/SUP]And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
