What's their purpose?

Seriously, these are the most disgusting creatures God has probably created. I have a huge phobia towards bugs, I nearly had a heart attack last night when a black cockroach passed by my legs in the kitchen. I ran out to the living room and started screaming and wheezing for like 30 seconds, seriously, I could have dropped dead there.

And guess what? We never found it again.. I had to buy traps and my sister set it around the kitchen floor. I'm still terrified to enter the kitchen and I'm being paranoid whether there is a cockroach crawling somewhere (or a spider or anything).

These unwanted house guests (), like every animal, are important part of the earth's ecosystem. They come into houses because they prefer warm, dark, moist locations like kitchen pantries to reproduce, lay their eggs, etc.

To be honest, I don't see how that is helping with the ecosystem.

Well in terms of helping the ecosystem, they have a symbiotic relationship with bacteria. They are important part of the food web in that they serve as food for other animals and are scavengers - without scavengers, the world will be covered with dead animals. Every creature no matter how small or disgusting is important in sustaining the earth. :)

There are many people who do not feel as you do at all. My Grandmother taught me to never, ever, harm a ladybug or a daddy long legs. I was making supper at my daughters in Hawaii, once, when I found a huge bug on the stove and started to kill it. My daughter ran at me screaming don't DO that, it would have brought bad luck on the house to harm that thing. We had to carefully entice the bug on paper and carry it outside.

My neighbor had the lushest garden in the neighborhood. He never used insecticides, he used snakes. He had special boards laying around the garden for them to sleep under and often sat watching them and talking to them. They kept his garden free of the pests that would ruin his produce.

I so understand your dilemma. I have the same reaction with spiders. I can't even see them on tv. My kids think it's hilarious when they say "Mom, come see this" and there's a spider on TV, fake or real, doesn't matter. I've been like this since childhood. I remember coming home late from a date once, everyone was asleep, I got ready for bed and then saw a spider on my bedroom wall. Grabbed my blanket and pillow and slept in the living room. (it was either that, wake my dad....). I know they do serve a purpose, like catching flies and other bugs in their webs, but still, they scare me to death. I'd rather see a snake in my house then a spider.

Imagine if you could hear that cockroach....he was probably screaming too at the gigantic terrifying sight of you!!;)
And guess what? We never found it again..
because he's hiding from you, his legs are still shaking...;)

I'm still terrified to enter the kitchen....
and so is he.....:D

Jokes aside, I'm not too worried with insects but cockroaches are my pet hate.....and where I am they are HUGE!

Ah come on ..... Some ladies are talking about how icky cockroaches are and you try to turn that into a debate about evolution. Slow day for you? You could post this on some other threads about evolution and get a much better debate.

If I wasn't an aspiring gentleman, I would totally post pictures of roaches in this thread, just for the squeals. :p

Cockroaches are gross but I don't find them scary. I'm not a fan of spiders though and we have heaps of them in Australia (many of them being poisonous). Someone please explain to me the purpose of mosquitoes.

There's no debate, I think his post was pretty relevant, I mean its a bit pointless to try and personally poison them, because if two or three are immune and survive they will be super roaches and spawn the next gen. of also immune roaches (if the genes give them the right mix). I guess the best advice is to seal off any holes allowing them in and leave no food out or exposed.
