Just think of the implications of this:
1 Health care system becoming clogged with individuals in need of medical attention of some kind due to obesity Leaving less health care professionals time available for those truly in need of it = More health care providers= #2
2 Higher health care insurance premiums due to higher volumes of individuals in the health care system(somebody has to pay for it)=#3
3 Higher costs for pharmaceuticals and medicines due of course because of higher volumes of individuals in need of them=supply and demand = profiteering
The western diet (for the most part) is too high in fat(high cholestorol), too low in fibre, too high of a sugar content (diabetes) and lacks many of the essential nutrients and vitamins needed for a healthy body. Not too mention with the advent of the car and modern transportation systems how much excercise do we really get in any given day
A serious emphasis should be put on the masses to curb these patterns or it will only be detrimental not only to ones health but also ones pocketbook in the future!
You make some good points here. The obesity factor may well affect our healthcare system much as alcohol and tobacco abuse have. I would be very surprised to learn that it hasn't already. When added to the fact that the babyboomer generation is beginning to retire in the US and will qualify for governmental programs, something must be done.

I totally agree with Bridget. As much as I love being an American, it troubles me that I have lived in other parts of the world where quality fruits and veggies were far more readily available and economical than they are here in the US.

And look at the physical and mental health programs employers/governments sponsor in other countries. So many employers look at productivity and feel these programs would be a burden, not realizing that a physically/mentally healthy employee is more likely to show up for work everyday with a better attitude, and be more productive as a result. It could also affect the cost of group health policies.

We can't blame the fast food industry. If there was no demand, they wouldn't be in business. We have to begin taking responsibility for our own health and those we love. A side benefit would be families sitting down at the dinner table again at the end of the day, praying for one another and blessing their food, and growing closer as a result. :) That would be awesome :)

Half of Americans guzzle sugary drinks daily
Teenage boys downing the most soda, sports beverages and other sweetened liquids, CDC report finds

msnbc.com news services
updated 8/31/2011

ATLANTA — About half of Americans drink a sugar-sweetened beverage on any given day,
with teenagers and young men consuming way more than recommended limits for
staying healthy.

A new study found that one in 20 drinks the equivalent of more than four cans of soda
each day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention research also showed teenage
boys drink the most soda, sports drinks and other sugary liquids.

Researchers from the CDC interviewed 17,000 Americans about their diets. The average
male in the survey consumed 175 calories in a day from drinks containing added sugar,
while the typical female consumed 94 calories from such drinks.

Boys aged 12 to 19 consumed 273 calories a day from sugar-sweetened drinks, or the
equivalent of about two 12-ounce cans of carbonated cola -- more than any other group.
Men aged 20 to 39 consumed 252 calories a day from beverages containing added sugar,
the second-highest amount.

The American Heart Association recommends getting no more than 450 calories a week
from sugar-sweetened beverages, or less than three cans of soda. Sugary drinks have
been linked to weight gain, obesity and type 2 diabetes. Many schools have stopped
selling soda or artificial juices.

"This is one area that people can look to if they are trying to limit their consumption of
added sugars," study author Cynthia Ogden said in an interview.

The survey also found that non-Hispanic black children and adolescents obtained 8.5
percent of their daily calories from sugar-sweetened drinks, higher than the 7.7 percent
among non-Hispanic white children and teens and 7.4 percent for Mexican-American
youths.

Sugar drinks were defined as sodas, fruit drinks, energy drinks, sports and sweetened
bottled waters.

For adults 20 and over, the percentage of daily calories obtained from sugar drinks rose
to 8.6 percent for non-Hispanic blacks and 8.2 for Mexican-Americans but declined to 5.3
percent for non-Hispanic whites.

The study also found that lower-income children and adults consumed more daily calories
from sugar-added drinks than those with higher incomes.

The CDC report released Wednesday is said to be the first to offer national statistics for
adults and kids. Past studies have focused on certain groups, particularly school kids.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report

Proverbs 23:1-3 (KJV):
1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:
2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

Proverbs 23:1-3 (AMP):
1 When you sit down to eat with a ruler, consider who and what are before you;
2 For you will put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to desire.
3 Be not desirous of his dainties, for it is deceitful food (offered with questionable motives).

I agree that half of American will be obese. If people just watched how many calories they eat in a day, they could eat whatever they want and not gain weight. Sure, it's better to eat fruits, veggies, and whole grains, but you could only eat junk food if you really wanted and stayed within your calorie range. People just need to be aware of how much they're really eating.
