Not very often at all.

This wilderness period is just lasting far too long.
I'm kind of there too. It's not that I don't see Him, but I am really having trouble discerning what my next step should be. Funny though, this has maybe been my most unsuccessful year by human standards, but I feel like it might have been the most successful in understanding and faith development. I feel like I'm at the top of my game in every aspect but have no outlet to make a difference. I'm just waiting. I don't know what for. I'd like to think He has given me this time to pluck myself from the world, and prepare me for something wonderful, but can't help but ponder if he is keeping me from going on a "Don Quixote" quest and holding me back until I regain my senses. Either way I feel ready for something exciting. Be blessed Tintin, I am praying for guidance and comfort for you.

The times you don't seem to hear from God or feel His presence because He's testing you to see if you'll still be faithful to Him without hearing from Him/feeling Him around. It's something all believers experience in their lives as part of their growth in Christ. Some experience wilderness periods more than others and some last far longer than others. That's my experience.
I experienced that for a few years during a time when I felt I most needed to hear from Him. The pastor at church then had a message for "somebody" that God speaks to you through the Grace He gives you to do what you are doing.

I have often had this too. But it does not always go this way, so don't be discouraged if you go through a dry time. He is still there.
