I didn't find any threads on this movie yet, and was wondering if others have seen it, and what was your impression of it?

I saw it this weekend (yes, I'm behind the times...) and found it to be somewhat odd..

It's sloooooooow.... especially at the first, but picks up a little bit after he meets the young man.

My wife gave up about halfway through it, but I stuck it out. I think I understand the comparison that was attempted between Jesus and the young man... both have issues with worries that Dad thinks they are "bad sons"... Should the young man go do what HE wants to do, versus what his Dad wants him to do. The mother that had a son whose dad was NOT his biological father... I don't understand what part her illness plays...

The interaction with Satan is different, as well... almost as if he's just a rebellious, petulant child of God, who refused (and still refuses) to do what God wants him to do. He almost becomes "likeable" toward the end of the movie... at least understandable....

Overall, I'd rate it.... odd.

How far behind the times am I? I never even heard of it.........but from your description.......I don't understand how they could think that God considered Jesus to be a "bad Son?" Or, why would Jesus think God thought that?

Everything I have read in Scripture would disavow this comparison.

Just my thoughts................... :)

Sounds as bad as Brother Sun, Sister Moon. My wife and I both got up and walked out of the theater, giving up on that one to ever come to life.

Never heard of it. I'm out of touch with popular culture, so it's not odd for me to not know about movies. I might give it a go one of these times I get to the rental place. Might be a change of pace from the stuff I have been watching lately.

Yes, of course that is correct... I might have misunderstood the movie. It was so slow, I was thinking "there's got to be some underlying theme here" so I got all cerebral about it. Probably misunderstood...

Jesus prays to God and says essentially "where are you, Father?" and gets no response. He then meets the boy who is having issues with HIS father, and in one scene the boy shouts "I am NOT a bad son" several times. It shows Jesus looking amused at first, then he gets "thoughtful", as if recognizing the boy is like him....

Or, I misunderstood it...:D

I think the movie was trying to emphasize the humanity of Jesus, and the struggle with the temptation of Satan.... and that while Jesus never gave in to the taunts of Satan, there were a couple of times that Jesus looked a little doubtful.... as any human would.

I actually don't trust movies like this and don't watch them. I never even watched the Hollywood attempt of Noah. I get uneasy when they try to make money in that way from the Bible.

The Bible and Hollywood does not mix :)

I understand your unease.... I try to look at it from the viewpoint of "I know it's likely NOT going to be Biblically accurate" but I watch it to see how they represent Biblical facts and concepts.

"Noah" was not even purported to be accurate.... the director publically stated that it was NOT accurate, but it was a movie, for entertainment... and it was entertaining.

"Passion of the Christ" was perhaps one of the best of that breed, in my opinion.

I did misread the title and pictured this

Truthfully, I have to be very daring to watch anything considered "a Christian movie" anymore. 44 years of waiting for a good one, and I can think of only one that was surprisingly good. (The Book of Ruth.) We still seem to be stuck somewhere between pretentious and agenda driven.

I was thinking the same thing about the comment that Satan was almost likeable, "detestable", but all movies seem to have an agenda.

Yes....I will probably watch it again sometime in the future, but this one seemed to stress the humanity of Jesus, and the former angelic status of Satan. He wasn't portrayed as totally evil, more like a rebellious former son.

I had forgotten, but I also liked "The Book of John".... I thought that was pretty well made, and fairly accurate.

I tried watching it, but it sounded like a too-long commencement speech. (I graduated high school to a three-hour speech of why Nixon was horrible, which jaded me to long speeches way too young. lol) Everything Jesus ever said was the script, but most of the scenes were him talking to a small group in a crowded spot. As if, that's all he did.

Even if it was just what Jesus said, his words were so powerful, you can't just keep listening without any pondering, but that's pretty much what we were expected to do.

(Kind of picky, ain't I?)

i think part of this "let's make films about the Bible" craze involves not having to pay an author for permission?

($$$$$$)

but then, i'm a cynical recovering pessimist.

The Greatest Story Ever Told was an excellent Christian Movie. I would recommend it to everyone.

Now and again, we have a "movie night" for the Congregation, KIDS INCLUDED, and have snacks and show this film. It is always a "hit."
