Dear Grammar,
1 + 1 is always 2. Why is there a comma before a conjunction sometimes, but not always? Was there supposed to be a comma before "but" in the last sentence? Was "but" supposed to have quotes in the last sentence? Is it quotes or quote marks? Why is there a question mark in dialog at the end of a question, but before the tag, but not if the person saying the dialog is saying a complete sentence, it's a commas before the tag? Did I get all the commas right in that last sentence?
Or, basically, why can't grammar be as logical as arithmatic? 1 + 1 = 2, comma always before the conjunction, only one word for "there/their/they're and let context bare out which there there is?
In short, (which is also grammatically incorrect, because I lost "short" long ago. And should there be a comma before because in that last sentence? And how many quotes should I have used in all this simply because I was showing a specific word as that word, but not as part of the meaning for that word?), you're just way too confusing for me, so you owe me a free editor so I don't have to waste my time trying to make 1 + 1 = 2 with grammar.
Insincerly Yours,
Lynn
