The definition is to sacrifice ones life for a belief in religion or freedom.

Mt.2:16 the children 2 and under who were slain by Herods command after he was not told by the wise men where Jesus was.

These innocents I believe we're the first martyers for Jesus!

I know others in the word of God were slain for their FAITH in God.

Many people have been killed for a cause or purpose.I'm not talking self- martyerdom,to me that is still suicide.
Even though we have Samon as an example that was killed along with the Phillistines he slew.

You can self abase, whether in worldly goods,or any earthly comfort but is this being a martyer?

We say with our mouth" I would give my life for Jesus,or I will die for Him".

Will you?

Jesus said deny thyself, take up YOUR CROSS and follow me.
Are you doing that today? Now?

i dont know if its matrydom if you abase yourself...

Its more you just put your life on the line for following Jesus. Some people cannot accept that and wish ill on you. But you have to be willing to even give up your own life for eternal life.

Its often said the first christian matyr was Stephen, in the book of acts. As people were stoning him, he kept steadfast in his faith.

the babes who were slaughtered, were jewish babes and werent technically christians or believers but innocents.

Very good Lanolin and I agree we have to lay aside our desire of the flesh to perform His will for our lives.
Yes Stephen was the 1st. Christian martyr ,the babies we slain according to prophecy in Lamentations according to Matthews account.. They were killed bc Herod sought Jesus to kill Him.

I question could we die for Him under persecution as Stephen!

Sometimes I think that that is an easy choice. I think the tough choices have to do with mercy, grace and self control.
Doing good to someone who actively works against you, praying for them and holding your tongue from calling them out, is tough. What does it look like to love your enemy?
Could those be ex-spouses who wronged you? What is your reaction to them? What if you try and be kind and they repay it with lies? What do you do then? What if they will never change? What about a co-worker who makes your life difficult? Do you earnestly pray for them? These are honest questions as it is so difficult. I cannot speak for anyone else so I'll speak for me.
Not transforming into battles of eye for an eye is a struggle. The big things I don't worry about. I am concerned with the minor irritations, disappointments and small betrayals that threaten the life I am meant to live. I am being as transparent as possible.
I'm not worried about someone challenging me to renounce Christ or die.
I know the bigger threat is being unloving and lacking in grace when I am hurt. God forgive me for my failures and help me to be who you made me to be. I know is Christ all things are possible. Now I need to believe that for those who hurt me.
Help me to see them as you do Lord.
I ask you brothers and sisters to forgive me my faults. Bless you all.
