With lego, I could actually touch it.
Although I didnt have the real lego but the ones free from the supermarket called bricks.

I asked the children could they build me a supermarket and they did, but then one child busted it down the next day.

If I did have lego, I would build a library, but then I have a REAL library to build with real books instead of bits of plastic so maybe its just a thing for children, and minecrafts seems to be for more for children not adults. They cant go into the real mines of course, though many in africa do. I just dont really see the appeal of mining.

Ive been in a quarry but it was an open cast gold mine and it was just a huge wasteland. Goldmining was then banned because it destroyed the forest.

The principal accused me of trying to undermine her.

I had no idea she felt that way, but then, the library was in the ground floor, underground, literally beneath her office. I always thought the passage by the stairs would lead to a tunnel to the Principals office and there was probably a trapdoor in the floor beside the desk where she would push a button and the hapless students who were rebellious would fall in when she wanted to expel them.

No wonder the students were obsessed with minecraft.

My son loves minecraft. I don't see anything wrong with it... other than the normal screens and what they do to kids. 😆 He's limited with his time on it.

I did tell him to stop killing the chickens in it. It just seems wrong that they hack them. But he says you have to bc they overpopulate. Granted...I had the Sims as a kid and remember putting walls all around them so the grim reaper couldn't get to them when they died. So.... that seems worse.

He also talks about his inventory in it and all the different kinds of material he uses for building. He's going into kindergarten so seems intense for his age. Then again another kid in his class came up to me and started talking about Roblocks the same way. 😆 that's online though so I'll take the minecraft over it.

I remember playing Lemmings, the goal was to stop them from dying so you had to direct them where to go and they dug tunnels. Similar?

Sim City I vaguely remember.
But then my brothers grew out of video games. The ones we had on computer were fairly lame, one was pinball and the other was solitaire or hearts card game. Real pinball and cards were better.

Scholastic did have one that was book related but it required too much computer power or memory to run and I just gave up and thought children wouldnt be interested they are just after really basic point and click pigeon feeding software like angry birds or free rice.

Im suppose that one point I might actually get to play Minecraft but the boys were stingy with their consoles. And they never let girls play. Perhaps if they designed mines on computer to be supersafe there wouldnt be tragedies like Pike River Mine.

And why chickens. Why no canaries?

There are parrots.
You'd probably need a mode to get canaries, though.

I have played minecraft for several years. I use it mostly as a distraction. I have never killed the dragon because it is really hard to do and it seems pointless. What I enjoy is the creative aspect; you imagine something you could build and build it. If you don't like the way it turned out you can remove what you don't like and correct it. You can create (and delete) as many worlds as you like. So it is a learning experience where you play with creative elements like color, texture, proportion, scale, and mechanical devices in a 3D landscape. You have to watch your back because there are monsters that want to kill you, but there are also ways to make yourself bullet proof. So there is a survival aspect and you have to find and eat food to keep going. There are many biomes or environments to explore both above ground and below ground. It is harmless pass time, safe for kids young and old. If you are an architecture student you should play this game as it gives you creative 3D practice.

Creepers are one of the monsters, they are like suicide bombers that blow you and themselves up.

Redstone is an element you can mine that is used for making electrical and mechanical devices.

My sons say it's super easy to kill the dragon if you bring about 5 beds and use them as bombs. Make sure you're protected by a block before you explode the beds.
They also say it's not completely pointless to kill the dragon because it unlocks the Elytra, which allows you to glide and boost yourself along with fireworks...so kinda gives the ability to fly.
