But in defense of those who are in church, and to that Pastor(i am unsure if i would have smashed the phone,i do however would have said, please, for the sake of the others here..take the call outside if you must, and only return when its done, thank you)and only say it once..then oust them after that first warning.
When we are in church, let's not take the things of God as a joke!
..seriously..who does not put their cellphone in silent in church!? I even so much as remove the battery from my phone..when i am in church..i want nobody to disrupt me, it can wait till after service..really it can, if it cannot..then step outside..and take your call outside..have some consideration for those others in your church community. Some folks, its all about them..they have no common sense or consideration..so..while it may have been extreme..he was upset..who knows..maybe she was a repeat offender?! You do not know..nothing bugs me more than those who take phone calls in service..ugh..or talk loud..seriously?

1 Timothy 5:17 17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

These people weren't giving him any honor at all. Neither were they giving reverence to God for allowing all these distractions. However, his actions were disorderly, to say the least.
Proper discipline in the church is important. This leader showed his lack of discipline by letting these things go till he could no longer stand it. It should have been stopped at the beginning of the problem, not the end.

1 Timothy 3:1-7 1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Agreed he could have addressed it verbally by asking her to take the phone call outside of the sanctuary or to ask her to turn off her phone/do not take the call and not taken the phone to the floor, part of me honesty almost wonders if this is dramatized and not even a real event, just saying...yet the woman in the congregation was equally inconsiderate to The Pastor who was teaching, and to her fellow attendees/members by even taking the call..I would have silenced my phone(had i forgot to do so,and not pick it up in church)
Of course, many in church have yet to die to self and hold onto their selfish nature..the whole, its about me syndrome i call it.

You all are focused on what the congregation was doing...
All I saw was a unloving pastor.
My pastor would have laughed and said something like...
when everyone is ready I will continue.
We have a lot of kids at our church.
We have police, firemen and doctors.
They all get calls during service and cannot shut off their phones.
They keep them on vibrate...but getting up and leaving is a distraction.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

There was a reason we were focused on the congregation....... we couldn't hear the pastor because of them!

Regardless, The blatant taking a call is rude..
just keep that sucker on vibrate, and quietly slip away to the lobby or parking lot..its called etiquette..sadly many in the church disregard even their neighbor(even in church) and cannot faithfully love and honor them for a mere hour..sigh..
You saw the pastor, But i saw the woman picking up the phone, and being one who is easily distracted..could feel the disruption and lack of consideration she had for her Pastor for one,and 2, for her brethren..and 3,for God.

Oh my goodness! Perhaps his wife gave him burnt toast for breakfast, hence the temper? :D

Okay jokes aside. Not only did her cell phone ringing disrupt the service, she took the call in the room while the pastor was preaching. That was very disrespectful. She should have quickly exited the room to answer it. Also, the pastor's reaction was uncalled for. So much for correct in love.

I just want you all to know...
I don't think is is OK that people answer phones, carry on conversations and doodle on paper....

I guess out of habit I watched the pastor through all the distractions.
Isn't that what we should do.
Keep your heart on the message...ignore the other people arround you.
And I think that is why what he did seemed so harsh to me.
He is to set the example for the church.

If that person would have been infront of me in church.
I might have asked them to step outside politely.
Just as the pastor should have done.
Then he could have adressed the problem after the sermon.
I find it ironic that he was teaching on love...yet was lacking in it his own actions.

The person answering the phone could be lacking in knowledge.
What I mean is...a new born in Christ.
Just because someone goes to church does not mean they have a full understanding of why we are there.
Some people are growing in Christ.
If the person answering the cell phone had a close relationship with Jesus and understood who He is,
I think they would have had more respect for God's word being taught. In His house of worship.

My pastor has adopted 5 children.
Some of them with deep emotional issues.
I honestly think he would have stopped and prayed.
( for God to be in charge of the congregation. )
Because he knows where our help comes from,
and what we war is against.
The enemy will do what ever he can to stop the sermon.
Inculding cause the pastor to lose self control.
and spoil a sermon on the message of love.

Ephesian 6:12
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

It is not against the person answering the phone...
it is against the person's spirit not summiting to Christ.
