QUESTION:
"Should a Christian consult horoscopes?"

ANSWER: The purpose of a horoscope is to gain insight into a person’s character and foretell the future. The basic belief of astrology is that planets and stars exert an influence upon our lives. Those with special knowledge—astrologers—can predict events in a person’s life. It is distressing that most major newspapers have a horoscope column, and even more distressing that many Christians read their horoscopes.

The Bible expressly forbids divination, sorcery, and hidden arts Deuteronomy 18:10-14. God’s people are to heed God only Deuteronomy 18:15. Any other source of guidance, information, or revelation is to be rejected outright. See also Acts 16:16-18. The Bible points to Jesus Christ as the only proper focus of faith Acts 4:12; Hebrews 12:2 . Our trust is in God alone, and we know that He will direct our paths Proverbs 3:5-6. Faith in anything besides God is misplaced.

Astrology opposes biblical teaching in at least two ways: it advocates faith in something other than God, and it is a form of divination. We cannot determine God's will for our lives through horoscopes. As Christians, we are to read the Bible and pray to God in order to gain wisdom and guidance. Consulting a horoscope is a violation of God's means of communicating with His children. We strongly believe that horoscopes should be rejected by Christians.

Were there some ancient Israelites who did this?
What were the three wise men? I thought they were a kind of astrologer?

I agree with the OP, however nw does have a point, (and the bible if full of prophecy about the future, including signs. )
It should be mentioned though that the "wise men" were from one of the surrounding cultures who used to do this sort of thing, not jews.

a number of my friends in college used to look up their horoscopes everyday, it was sort of a humorous past time and often caused great laughter, much the same way that fortune cookies can add to the fun of a dinner out.

but across time, i noticed that a few of them were actually beginning to get serious about thinking there was "something" behind horoscopes (and tarot) which actually had meaning. and yes, we are talking about Christians here! so i backed off "playing" the game with them.

i now have no doubts that Satan can make the silliest of things come "true", if it will distract you from your relationship with God and therefore neutralize you rather easily. i came to this conclusion from having watched those friends whom got "serious" about this and how they grew away from God and became horoscope junkies, while myself and others, dropped the game and grew closer to God. perhaps i am reading too much into this but, that sure is how it worked out.....

No I think you are right. The closer I have gotten to God my spirit backs away from stuff like that. I can't read it and a feeling of NO comes over me lol. Love my God I do and that he is good about giving that feeling that has his child backing away from some sin like its a viper snake. Another time that feeling came over me was when my friend had put that movie on about the serial killer that thought he was God with the cult of women. The Holy Spirit made me MOVE right then and get up and leave the room. So I understand why you backed completely away from it and am happy God pulled you away from that trap. If you really truly think about it the devil mostly goes after Christians. The lost already belong to him and we work for God so who do you think he wants to make fall? He will use any means possible to drawing us away from God because that means more lost souls for him if we become one with the world and sin instead of one with God. I am glad you realized what you have Chip. God Bless Brotha!!!

Just wanted to let you know, I don't think following horoscopes is acceptable to God. Only He knows our future. I wanted to present a different opinion to see where it took the conversation.

I have looked at my horoscope for years. I do not believe in astrology. I sometimes think it is interesting to see if there is any correlation between what is suggested will happen and what actually happens in my life. I will look back to see what was predicted and compare that to what actually happened. I have not found any astrological predictions to be correct.

I believe, if it is true God knows what will happen in my life, then I must be living a life of predestination(sort of). If this is the case, then what are the choices I have? What can I do to change the life that God knows I am going to live?

Situations new to me are already known to God. My experiences are then new to me only. They are not new to God. If God knows all, is accepting Christ as my Lord and Savior going to help anything? Will I still suffer eternal fire or be rewarded with heaven upon the end of my earthly existence just because I accepted Jesus?

The only thing I believe I can change is how I feel about what is happening in my life. I may be able to ask and receive the grace I need to get through situations I have no control over. I do not believe, therefore, that I have any control over anything in my life. I only have a decision to make about how I react or respond. I only have the option of how to look at what happens(my perspective).

Therefore, I am at the mercy of my Lord and Savior. I think this is what I need to accept. I think this is why I need salvation without deed. A grace given to me freely by the Son of God. I cannot change what will happen. In the end, I can only pray for His mercy.

Therefore, what is my purpose? Only God knows.

Thoughts? Please do not be greatly angered by my comments. I know I am provoking by what I have written, but I am trying to learn what others think so I may grow in my faith and understanding.

Thank you.

Not sure about this. Remember the Roman who's servant was sick and went to Jesus for help? Jesus told him he would come to his home and check it out. The Roman said he didn't need him to do this. As a soldier, he tells people what to do and they do it. He knew all he needed Jesus to do was to tell it to be done and it would. His servant would be healed. Jesus said, I think, He had not found faith such as this in His own land.

Where is this? I've been looking for it. I just read it this week and now cannot find it. Can't remember if it was MarK or Luke. Don't believe it was Mathew or John, but not positive.

I am truly sorry if I offended anyone with this comment. I am struggling, like many of you, to understand changes I have endured in the past 1 1/2 years of my life.

Sometimes I need to ask tough questions. I thought this was the place to do that. Maybe I am wrong. You all seem to have so much faith and love. Many of you know scripture so well, I am in awe.

I do not know how I come across to you:

What do you think I am here to accomplish?
Do my comments read like I am naive or ignorant or......?
Is there something you want to ask me?
Is there something you want to tell me?

I will check my messages tomorrow afternoon. Don't be afraid to ask. I can only tell you, "I won't talk about that."

Good night, All. I will remember you in my prayers tonight.
