Patty Griffin - "Shine A Different Way"

I woke up to hear this song for the first time, playing on my radio alarm, one day about a year and a half ago, and within a couple of weeks, I had explored quite a bit of her music online, having never heard any of it before, and also went to see her in concert, for she came through town around that time; I had not been to a concert for a while, and she put on a fabulous show, and she did play this song...

I thank God he sent a young pastor your way. And if I have said anything to encourage you - it is an honor, indeed, if I would be worthy enough to be used by Jesus in that way. (Smile). I love a friend of mine who is also a pastor, his name is Scott - because his demeanor is so slow and confident, he could be telling a lie and I would believe him. But the beauty of his friendship to me is the fact his demeanor and his words are coupled with my spirit that have the Holy Spirit proof-reading everything he says. And I am friends with him because we spur one another on in love and good deeds; patiently discussing and discovering God's truths alongside each other. He has become my mentor.

I see the Lords demeanor in my friend Scott. Our Lord never pressed anyone to follow Him unconditionally; nor did He wish to be followed merely out of an impulse of enthusiasm. He never pleaded, He never entrapped; He made discipleship intensely narrow, and pointed out certain things which could never be in those who followed Him.

Now, when I say Scott has a gentle-spirit, people today take that to mean we need to take away and eliminate the harshness out of Our Lord's statements. But Scott was always loyal to God's Word in its entirety, for what Jesus says is hard; it is only easy when it comes to those who are His disciples. Whenever Our Lord talked about following Him He prefaced it with an "IF," never with an emphatic assertion, "You must." People who leave Jesus as their note of themselves carry with them a non-preaching attitude with them, rather, what they understand from the wisdom of God in their life is that God has gone alongside them discussing and discovering Himself with them their whole life, so why would they think to do it any other way with someone else? Discipleship, always carries an option with it. We are called to parent people not just get them to do a thing. That's not easy, but it fruits us and others up for real! AMEN Sista .... God is investing in you, let the river of life flow out of you!

God will even guide you thru your micro-wave experience. Smile.
Haha thats the best response ever, complete with humor! Scott sounds just like Ryan . its really amazing to see people chosen and touched by God like that isn't it? Its like seeing the face of Jesus and feeling Him in your presence. I've always been up front and I told Ryan too. And he said no matter what I feel from my "experience" to remember it is not HIM (Ryan) but it is Jesus touching me . Honestly, I never had a spiritual experience before in my life, like that. I actually was questioning my own sanity lol. But it seemed to be a good way to be insane so I rolled with it, and that year I read the Bible from beginning to finish for the first time and STILL go through in depth Bible studies through all the Gospels and took a class on Early Christian theology. I'm studying the Gospel of Mark now.

I just finished studying Mark a few months ago once again. I have always studied the other ones because I felt Mark was so dry. But God had me in that one and wow it has such historical accuracy. and I enjoyed it for the first time immensely. One of the Synoptic journeys Smile. Jesus the servant. I love bible study don't you?! I have a hard time in the Deuteronomy sections but I still love the timeline and history, it helps organize your thoughts on the whole of scripture. I think back to when they were still writing the scriptures, what a time to live on planet earth huh?! Thanks, but no thanks....I'll live now actually..

I haven't started Deuteronomy but really look forward to it. I always picture Mark sitting on the step listening to Jesus during the Last Supper. 10 to 12 years old in his PJ's. Mark was so young he was just on the fringes of being a disciple but his Mother Mary was a true disciple for some time. In Marks gospel and only in his gospel, you read when the San Hadrin came to the garden to arrest Jesus there was a young boy in linen (PJs) and when all the disciples ran in fear, the guards grabbed this boy by the scruff of his garment and his clothes came completely off, and he ran home naked. Has absolutely nothing to do with the story ...but I really believe it was young Mark, himself. He writes his gospel with a sense of urgency .."and this happened, and this happened "etc. A lot of heavy prosecution while writing ...so many Christians being martyred and thrown in prison every day. And its interesting how in Marks gospel WE know Jesus is the Son of God ...the demons know Jesus is the Son of God...but the disciples never quite get it till Peters confession to Christ . I find Marks gospel not detailed and beautifully written in a slow methodical form as Matthews ...but really quite amazing ! But I'm pretty new into it with about 7 more chapters in this study of Mark and his writing. I always think on what Christians had to do in those days compared to how Christians today have it WAY easier. Persecuted by some yes...but we don't have to worry about being thrown in prison or boiled in oil.

"Spiritual insight does not so much enable us to understand God as to understand that He is at work in the ordinary things of life, in the ordinary stuff human nature is made of. Oh, I have spun out of control mentally as I insist in letting your comments be the poetry to my ears....and as the Spirit works to wrought me out, I have yet to scope the vast divergencies of your simple application to the mind laid out on the table for all to see, grasp, and use.. Smile. Thank you for the twist of the top that begins the process of our personalities running a muck letting our Spirit and souls speak, and work out for God, and for our discombobulations to be experienced in earnest freedom. AMEN! "... (You go Huglife!)

Thoughts on Bible verse concerning "women dress". I've been reading about this woman asked to leave an airline on account of her cleavage. I saw the photos and it seems a lot of women wear low cut tops in the world today. Well actually, women fashion showed way MORE cleavage during the days of King Henry too. So I'm not sure why everyones so surprised. It seems to be more in the realm of fashion. I'm interested in what Christian community feels on this subject. Is it un-Christian to wear low cut tops in your opinion, or is this just another way people are striking out at one another?

Two passages in the New Testament concern proper dress for women:

I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God. (NIV, 1 Timothy 2:9-10)
Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful

(NIV, 1 Peter 3:2-3)

Many of the New Testament letters address specific abuses that occurred in the early Christian communities, and that may be the case here. Jesus had defied the standards of first-century male-dominated society by treating women as equals. Paul had declared all people equal in the family of God (Galatians 3:26-29). Many Bible scholars believe some women in the church had carried their "liberation" too far and adopted offensive styles of dress. Church leaders were anxious to avoid any hint of scandal in the churches, and these passages served that purpose.

Both of these passages also make the point that a person's true beauty comes from within and is properly expressed by good deeds rather than showy clothing and jewelry.

A few Christians interpret these passages as a requiring women to dress very plainly and refrain from wearing jewelry or using makeup. But most Christians believe the advice is simply to dress modestly and in good taste, according to the standards of the society they live in.

Men have different triggers than woman; as simple fact, so it is entirely important for woman to realize; men are putty in their hands so treat us as Christ would....gently, all the while - respecting God.

Thank you for showing me these quotes from Scripture. It really IS confusing...even braided hair, slave? And a lot of the elderly ladies at my church usually dress plainly but at service they wear their little hats and the prettiest dress they might own, just for service ...and in their mind ...for Jesus ! As for the lower cut dresses on younger girls...I Know some of them are kind and trying to be followers but I don't think they even consider how men see them ...its just become so common. TV I suppose has much to do with it.Wild child that I was during the 60's we weren't into PUSH up bras and all that, but we wore see through linen tops lol. It just seemed "everyone was doing it" you know? I really think these are subjects that should be bought up in sermons ..but it seems Pastors and church leaders find the subject too delicate...afraid of coming off as sexist or something maybe? Or puritanical ? But if they just made it in mention like you just did ...through scripture ...I think it would lead young girls in the right path some. (they would be confused about the braid part because braids are considered a modest way to lay down wild unruly hair) Oh! and the poor ladies in their Sunday best for Jesus ! They would be hurt thinking all this time they were PLEASING Him ! Yes, I suppose it would be a very gifted Pastor to approach this subject at all.

Actually my point was that in serving God it is not about doing it with the braided hair etc or any wardrobe for that matter if it causes us to pose in our walk with Christ in anyway, even braids and gold etc. if those things become our will over His will. Subsequently, I hold the view that woman should dress modestly and in good taste, according to standards of the society they live in, and to me braids, and even gold, etc that is driven from a heart set on respectfully honoring God in health and cleanliness and appropriateness can be alright. I may have over voiced that concern, but suffice it to say: the criteria is of the voice of the Holy Spirit. Thus, if the Spirit of God were to include those items on a persons list of disapprovals one would have to immediately obey even those items. Thank you for your insight there, I don't want to enter into legalism either..I do not judge of disapproval of those items at all. I simply allow His Spirit to judge all things.

I go to a church that focuses on outreach, and I love that. I am involved heavily with their discipleship programs and have many Life2Lifer's I share and discuss Christ with, and train, in small groups, in becoming a disciple who is trained, able to parent others for His Name sake.

Our church also loves more modern music and don't commonly use hymns at all, unless it has been a top 10 hit lately...smile. Now, don't get me wrong, I love their (also now my) music, and worship mightily thru it, but I will admit I miss a hymnal now and again in worshipping, but that is, to me, what my YouTube is for. Those I can understand the lyrics when singing them, and to me its meaty worship not just milk....Smile. We get a lot of people who are living a worldly life style yet. And I am open to that, for who am I to judge another mans choice in living? I think of them as in transformation mode yet; holiness not yet recognized. Thus, our church is surrounded with young and older ladies still connecting to the world's system of fashions.

I have no problem in accepting that, but I do know how it affects my flesh and my spirit, especially as a man, and especially as a Christian as well.. Not to say I look back, or even forward with diverse motives, but when a lady wears a tight clinging pant that shows all the details, coupled with all its adornments and multiple wrist wraps and even toe rings showing etc.. and she is endowed with great beauty and is in immaculate shape, your senses are aroused, and your spirit is diverted from God. Her testimony becomes less of her honoring God , and more of her honoring her conditioned vessel and diligent eating habits.. Now I say an AMEN to God's blessings, but the point here isn't about us at all its in showing our devotion to God, and showing others that it is of God that we are bestowed with our blessings.

So, I just love on them all the same, but I do have a moment of spiritual grab on the subject, that concerns me for their sake in relationship to the Lord. You know, simple discernment of our spirit thru a sharpened intuition. So, I draw close, (not too close) and discuss and discover God's truths with them.....(Hey, some one has to love them that way, right?!) Maybe I shouldn't bump the ladies in the church away from doing the same thing with them though - right?!! I mean literally give them a body slam to knock them out of the way, knocking them to the floor or thru the stained-glass church windows! No! that's not me! That's not even my church - we have no stain-glass windows. But, I do have lady friends which are good friends and are not inappropriate. But with married woman I tend to let only the women do most of that parenting process.
