I have a someone I know who's confided in me that they are really wanting to quit smoking, but ever since trying it seems like their smoking has escalated. They wanted to get advice from people who have quit smoking before, but they don't want to go on the public forums. Is there anyone who could offer any advice here or point me in the direction of somewhere here that may be a better place to post this for them?

I think their best bet would be to find a local program. I know there are some national ones out there that may have local chapters. The thing is, when we are determined to be free from sinful things, the devil isn't just going to let us go. Like any other thing that we want to break free from, we have to change our focus.

For me, when I wanted to be free from a sinful bondage that I had had for many years, what ultimately broke it was fully loving Christ. When it came down to choosing that sin or choosing to not want to hurt Him, disobey Him, I chose Him every time*. It is a daily thing. Choosing Him over that one thing (or many things, in truth) every single day and never letting your guard down, never believing it's been long enough or that you're strong enough to dabble. It never has been and we never are.

It is hard, don't get me wrong, but it gets easier. I quit smoking many years ago. Just change your focus and have something you can do to replace that thing when the craving or desire hits. Take it a day at a time and celebrate each day that success exists. :)

*Note: This is in regard to that one sin. I'm not stating that I've reached perfection and no longer sin, because that would be a lie. :)

I fought this fight for a long time, with several unsuccessful attempts.

I finally discovered something; physical addictions are easily overcome.
Nicotine withdrawals dissipate after about a week.
The biggest struggle was quitting in my head.

The only way I was able to finally win the war was to force my mind into submission.
When the thought of smoking came (which was frequent), I had to force my thoughts elsewhere.

I had to make that as much of a habit as I had made the cigarettes,
and I was a cigarette fiend for over twenty years.

Praise God, after a few months I was in control of it.

I have now been off the cigarettes for seven years and will never go back.
Once in a while I have a dream that I smoked a cigarette,
and I am always relieved when I wake up and realize I didn't really do it.

I have moved to the electronic cigarettes now. Yeah I've replaced one habit with another but the new electronic cigarettes are much cheaper and don't have anywhere near the level of toxins in them compared to the regular ones. Been 6 months now!

I do believe thought that there is a terrible prejudice against smokers in general though. Here in the uk they pay 11bn pounds to the government every year whilst only costing 3bn to the health services.

Our taxes would be outrageous without smokers lol

Keep very cold water within arms reach.
Replace the smoke with a few sips of water.
After a week, it's a done deal.

or you could try placing a bucket of warm water near your bed, and should your hand dip into it during the night while you are dreaming of smoking, well, it will be put out.........one way or another.

Seriously, will pray for whoever it is that's struggling
