Hey guys, sorry if this is random but I had a question in regards to snakes as pets. A lot of christian people that I know of say they're evil and I'd be crazy to have one as a pet (I was thinking about getting one for my birthday next year). I've been doing some research on this topic and I do believe God made all creatures. With that said, do snakes represent evil or is this just the misrepresentation they were given due to Satan appearing as a snake in Genesis?

People who try to demonize snakes are being more superstitious than biblical.
Some people say snakes and serpents (which is how Satan appeared) are not the same thing. I'm not an expert so I can speak to the validity of that.

I agree. I see nothing unbiblical about owning a pet snake.

Why have a pet that causes you to kill other living creatures in order to sustain your pet?

Seriously, get a goldfish.

Yeah you gotta feed a snake mice and rats and such. I'm with Utah.. Get a hamster..lol.. If you get an exotic snake, you gotta know how to take care of it, what to feed it and when. Some states won't let you own exotic snakes..Sooo you're better off without something that could possibly slip it's cage and eat you while you sleep. :/ lol

Awww no worries :) The snakes I would like as pets don't get big enough to harm you. They can be very docile. There's also pre-made food for them so you don't have to watch them eat live animals. I've done a lot of research on them. I really love reptiles. There's also a few other lizards I'm looking into as well :)

No. Satan either took the form of a serpent or possessed one, but snakes aren't in and of themselves aren't evil. Certainly they were effected by the curse of sin and that's why they kill and many can poison people with their venom. But snakes aren't evil. Besides, serpents and snakes aren't necessarily synonymous with each other (that's one belief that's been handed down through the years that's not necessarily laid out in black and white).

You do realise that goldfish raised on standard fish food are basically malnourished, right? They need live food in order to thrive.

To the original poster, I'm a snake keeper, and I both study and work with reptiles. I wouldn't ever feel the need to justify my pets to somebody clinically insane enough to believe that they're little demonic entities. Put yourself in better company and enjoy your pets as you will. :)

Try telling my little man he's evil

Not all snakes eat rodents.

There are several species of egg-eating snakes, and most garter snakes will thrive on a diet of fresh fish. My Cali garter has nothing but salmon fillets with Nutrobal supplement.

Just to add, Gemmy, if you need any advice about any particular species feel free to give me a shout privately. Always happy to help with scaley matters.

Goldfish flakes are made of dead goldfish... they go one step further by being cannibalistic!

What a cute little snake you have there!! He has beautiful coloring :) I'm thinking about getting a Ball Python or Red Tail Boa, something that doesn't grow as huge as, say, a burmese or reticulated python. They're tempting but get way too big for me.

Pretty contrasting care requirements there.

Royal pythons, I'd say, are ideal starter snakes once you get the husbandry right. A lot of people seem to have trouble getting them feeding, but that's simply down to sub-standard housing, in my opinion. They're small snakes maxing out at around 5 or 6ft (I've never seen one hit 6).

Proper red-tails on the other hand can get pretty big. You'd need a huge enclosure to keep one properly. If you like the look of boas I'd suggest looking at a crawl-cay boa. They're basically the same as the red-tails but they're a dwarf species, reaching around 5ft.

We had small snakes, nothing over 18 inches long. They're personable, and will interact with you (I say being not sure if that would apply to the huger snakes). They ate mealworms mostly, we tried giving them a mouse once but the mouse escaped. We found it 2 weeks later, put it back in with the snakes and it was so hungry it ate one of them! Talk about turning the tables... We also had lizards and iguanas, but they really weren't interactive and didn't make good pets. (It takes more than putting an animal in a cage to make a pet). But really, all animals are of God's creation and as such we do have a tie with them. A while back I was hiking down a trail and turned a corner to see a rattlesnake sunning itself in the trail. I stood there a minute, it looked at me I at him, it was almost another mile to go around, and finally I said "I don't suppose you'd let me step over you and be on my way..?" The snake responded with a lazy shake-shake, is if it was answering "uh-uh" So I turned around and went the long way.

Snakes can be cool, but whatever you get don't just cage an animal. That's not cool.
