Ahhh. Well, then I guess you could just feed him the garlic. Then he'll have garlic breath and protect you that way!

Dragon with fiery garlic breath?? Why not feed him some herbs too then hold up a chicken on a stick for him to breathe on? Then you're protected and you have a roasted chicken for dinner.
