Yeah, 9's really the best for now. That'll change sometime down the road, I'm sure. But modern defensive round capabilities have pushed it to the front of the pack when all things are considered.

I agree. A high-capacity 9mm should be all anybody needs for self defense. A .45 might be slightly better at stopping, but when you factor in the higher cost of ammunition for practice, you would probably be better off with the 9. At least, that was my choice.

For the "bear" question... I'm pretty sure I'd opt for the Glock 10mm.

I imagine AFTER an event such as a bear attack, I'd be thinking more along the lines of a double action .454 revolver.... with a couple of speed loaders, just in case.

I use to not think much of 9mm, but after looking at the test. I'm in the market for a pocket 9. Any suggestions?

It's no pocket carry, but I swear by my Walther PPS M2. 9mm single-stack. Slim as a deck of cards. Will fit about anywhere on your body. Feels big enough to shoot while you're at the range.

Ruger has really improved the trigger on the new LC9's.

I'd watch a few torture test videos before buying in though.

It was one of those guns I didn't expect to like, but ended up really digging at the range.

I looked at the Ruger LC9 and the Kel Tec PF9 earlier. The Kel Tec is nearly $100 less

I use to have a Kel Tec P32, but I lost it in the divorce.

The Taurus 709 slim might work really well for a pocket type thing... I have it's fatter brother, the PT111 G2 as my EDC.
Slam Taurus all you want, but mine has been literally flawless... no FTE, FTF/F... nothing. I've run every bullet weight, cheap or pricey through it. I can't remember if I've tried any of the steel cased stuff, but everything else just goes bang.

Trigger pull is acceptably good... just a little bit of creep. Accuracy is better than necessary.

I'm probably at around 1200 rounds through it right now.

Yeah, if you have the $1032.00 - Inexpensive good choice: Ruger LC9 - Probably < $350 if you shop.
Life's too short to settle for inferiority.
Ruger makes the best revolvers, so that's what I buy.
Sig makes the best auto-loaders, so.......why wouldn'cha?

So... I assume you drive a Maybach? Or, perhaps a Bugatti? :D

Some of us have champagne taste, but a beer budget....

If I had the fundage to buy whatever I wanted, pistol-wise, I imagine I would probably go with a Sig, or H&K... possibly one of the custom 1911's.

But, my finances being what they are, I have to find a lower price-point reliable pistol... key word... reliable. My Taurus pistols have proven to be so.

Higher cost usually (not always) simply means better fit and finish. Many of the low cost firearms are dead reliable. High Point comes to mind. My cheapo Norinco SKS has NEVER failed to fire/feed/eject.

Of all my Taurus pistols, the only problem I had was with the TCP and the slide hold-open tab being too long, getting nudged by the bullets advancing up the magazine, occasionally locking the slide back prematurely. Just a design flaw. I filed the tab down until I got no more premature lock backs, and it's been fine ever since.

You're talking about a $1,000 gun vs cars that cost hundreds of thousands.
$1,000 ain't that much money.
I know people who cough that much up to make two payments on their
brand new diesel pick-up that they drive around empty 99% of the time.
A suggestion was requested, I gave one based on my preference.

If you have an extra grand sitting around I happen to have a Soviet SVT40 that would like to have a home and $1k would be a great price, that's shipped to your ffl of course.
Then I can finance ministry as directed and receive eternal reward.

If I have an extra grand sitting around, it's none of your business.

LOL.... I was poking fun at the "always buy the best" mentality.... I KNOW you don't have that mentality about everything... that's why I was poking fun at it....

I AGREE with you... if you can afford it, get it. I spent almost $600 on a .380 for my wife... she wanted that one, so it was worth it to me. It was a Sig, also...

Actually, the SVT's are pretty cool rifles... the Soviet Garand... very well made, semi-autos that shoot the 7.62 X 54 rimmed round. Nice... Sweden (IIRC) made an even better version of that rifle.

Actually, the Bugatti I was talking about is a little higher than that.... look at the "standard" HP, though. Probably as close as you can come to sitting in a rocket on wheels. 2.46 seconds, 0-60....

With 1,001 horsepower pumping from its W16 engine, it's also the world's most powerful production car. And with a price tag of about $1.5 million, it's the world's most expensive new car. For the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, everything is a superlative.
