Some background here: I've been unwelll and have been advised to cope with the dark thoughts by doing things I enjoy (as well as therapy techniques). Well one thing I do enjoy and I find helps me cope is reading. I read all sorts of things but nothing dodgy. Only wholesome stuff which takes me out of myself. I have mobility isssues as well as mental health and am in pain a lot so reading is something I can do. At least when the mental stuff hasn't got to point where I can't focus. So anyway the other day I thought God told me not to read anything (other than Bible) for a whiles. I can't do it. I keep relapsing and igving in. So what would happen if I tiold God I couldn't yet obey Him om this issue and could I shelve it until I'm feeling stronger? Would He be angry? Would I lose relationship with Him?

It is really hard to concentrate when you are not well. Reading can be tough. I think it is wonderful that you are hearing God and trying to be obedient. I cannot help thinking that if God has asked you to do something and that it is in His will, which reading the Bible sure is :) then He will make that possible for you...He will not ask of you, what you cannot achieve. But you need to 'push' on. If reading is too much right now, do not set the bar too high, decide prayerfully what part of the Bible you would like to read and then try to read a chapter, maybe once or twice a day. Not trying to sit for an hour, but just 5 to 10 minutes. You will then feel better in yourself, success!! coz you will have achieved :) Another way to receive the Word is through a DVD, or audio. Online? There are lots of free studies etc but be discerning in what sites you choose, maybe seek some advice first? Pray. Watch a Godly Christian channel on TV, they can be really good, Bible teaching, Praise & Worship and up-lifting testimonies :) Most of all though, start focusing on what you can do and want to do...and on all the promises of God. Keep saying them to yourself when the 'negative speech' rises :) God Bless you, remember God wants you to be free from all this...you cannot do it, but He most certainly can :) <><

Why don't you try asking God why He seems to be asking you to do something you can't seem to do? It might not be Him talking, or He might have more information about why. I've seen it both ways. Asking Him is the best way to find out.

Be cautious of 'God told me'. True, God can speak to us and instruct us, but most people who say this, often end up unhappy with the outcome, or feel it has failed. Or use it as an excuse.
I knew a girl, when i was 18, i wanted to date. We were really close, everyone assumed we were dating already. When i finally asked her out she said 'God told me to wait'. Some time went by and i asked again. I was told 'God told me..' again. This went on for a while and every time 'God' told her something, it was different than all the other times. I eventually realized everything 'God' told her lined up perfectly with fears she had shared with me. She wasn't hearing God, but reacting to her fears and using God as the reason for her decisions.

I think reading only the bible can be a good thing, try reading it only for a day and then pray about it. Maybe have a bible study and concentrate hard, perhaps somethings you read have content that may be influencing you in the wrong way. I would say focus on fasting and prayer and more scripture. and only you can turn away from God he will never leave you.
