Hi all

A friend of mine has ALS. He was diagnosed in 2014. It has progressed to the point where he can walk, a little bit, but mostly uses a wheel chair. He can only use one finger when responding to a text/instant message on his phone. He struggles to talk. :(

I have never met anyone that has ALS, I'm not sure how to help. Right now we're all working to obtain funds - but a human doesn't just have financial needs.

Has anyone here ever had a friend/family member with ALS? I really want to help

Thank you in advance

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a disease that gets progressively worse until the patient becomes totally incapacitated and basically turns into an invalid unable to walk, talk, feed themself, etc etc.. There is no cure for ALS. Sadly, it's just a matter of time for your friend. :( Does he have Home Health nurses come in? Or hospice workers?

I wish i could phrase this the best way in 2 minutes. What i noticed in this, and most western forums for that matter, is that ppl are of course trained and grew up w/ the western style of healing and medication. i am not a TCM follower or practitioner, but there is definitely some wisdom in other eastern ways of healing, nto necessarily learning abt their doctrines or spiritual principles. Take grounding or earthing for ex., it is a free, very basic and simpel healing technique, but how many (%?) western doctors would prescribe that in their Rx form?

We grew up w/ doctors and wstern med, but often when i learn abt sand therapy, or water therapy as simple as a warm compress... or warm saline gurgle for a sore throat, instead of drugs, i recall, were we not brought up with that?! Perhaps the more complex procedures many (the ave.?) asian goes thru is an xray and a tooth extraction, and how many of the poor really can have mri, biopsy, etc. But many/some (no stats) still heal w/o chemotherapy and all the other medications andhigh tech therapies because God also gave the poorer ppl sand, sea and sun... herbs...

Oh, and i only meant to cut and paste this info from an ad, wc might be helpful the the person with als...

ps. and i really wonder abt ppl saying there is no cure for whatever.. do we really believe this? ppl say we pray, and by His stripes we are healed... but stil believe what the MDs said that there is no cure...

i mean, diabetes for one, i cannot say i read/heard or understood every detail of this for example, as i only saw it in a child's feed on fb. but when they say 'reversed diabetes' is that not healing? we see this more and more online. sorry, this wasnt meant to derail the thread.

Despite what the bible says, God does NOT heal everyone who prays for it. There is no cure for ALS, and ions won't help either. I've prayed, BEGGED for healing for DECADES..no cigar :/

Be there with your friend when you can, and help him/help his family whenever they need something you can provide. That's about as much as you can do without being a professional trained in working with ALS patients. And of course, pray for him and his family as well. You didn't mention whether your friend is saved or not, but just in case he isn't, I would also advise you to share the Gospel with him, and pray not just for his physical healing but for his salvation.

The area of holistic healing I am most familiar with; diet and related natural holistic treatments like herbs, flowers, oils, oxygen therapy, and vibration therapy, etc., and certain supplementation,
diseases like ALS and really any neural ailment, like Parkinson's, etc., are virtually incurable.
They CAN be slowed down, sometimes even halted for a time, sometimes for a long period of time, using the treatments I mentioned above, but as far as reversing it, that is very rare, maybe even unheard of.
Anyone who claims they have experienced a significant reversal of their disease in this class of diseases is either lying, demented, in denial, or has experienced a true miracle.

I don't have ALS. But I've had epilepsy since age 5, and a bad back since age 27 or so. Many times I've prayed and begged for healing, to no avail. If God wanted ALL people healed, he would heal them.

Yes, we really believe this. And we believe this because ALS kills. Sometimes quickly like Lou Gehrig. Sometimes slowly like Steven Hawking, but it does kill, so yes there is no cure for it. It's not diabetes. It's ALS. We believe this because it's true.

And there is no cure. God can miraculously heal the guy, but try and find stories where God heals ALS. If he has ever done it, it wasn't often.

For HH. Yes, I had a friend who had it. She lasted 18 months strong enough to stay online, and then she disappeared. Last I heard from her she fell off the bed and then was stuck in that little space between her bed and the wall until her husband came home from work and helped her. She knew her finger muscles were going, so she wouldn't be online much longer. (I knew her on a disabled support chat long ago.)

And reversing diabetes is putting it in remission, not curing it. I'm capable of getting my blood sugar levels down to normal. I still have diabetes.

Hi all

Thank you for your input. I know that there is no cure for ALS. I was hoping there were people on here whom could share their experience with ALS. Like maybe something to slow down the speed of my friends illness, suggestions on apps or things someone with ALS could still enjoy. I am offering my assistance wherever I can, unfortunately I regularly have car problems.
So far our plan is to go to a petting zoo at the end of the month (after I am paid), I see a person with ALS still has feeling so he may enjoy touching the animals.
Thank you again for your input

There isn't anything to be done to slow down ALS. It's a disease that worsens progressively and rather quickly. Go to webmd and mayoclinic.com and do some research on it. :)

I did research.
It doesn't progress with everyone quickly.
Thank you though.

Father God, we come before your throne, daily, Lord, moment by moment, as we need you in so many ways for so many things.

As we go through these different things, Lord, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, for ourselves and each other we thank you that we CAN trust in you, the Lord of heaven and earth, the giver of life, and life eternal, our God and our Savior Jesus.

We know there IS no miracle until you grant it, Lord, yet life, and the very creation by you speaking life into existence IS a miracle we'll forever wonder and be in awe of.

We also know if you just say the word, we'll be healed. We know that there is power and healing in the name of Jesus, Name above all names, and the day is coming when we have the ultimate healing, no more pain, tears, sorrow, or separation, and we thank you.

And we thank you that you go with us always, on the mountain and in the valley, and as we continue on in faith, Lord, we DO ask for more miracles, and more grace to bear, and we look for cures in this life, as we await your forever cure in your kingdom with Jesus.

So we lift each other up to your throne of grace, maybe today someone has a breakthrough in the fight against ALS and our friend of HonestlyHumbled receives new hope, or maybe you do a personal miracle there, Lord, wouldn't that be so great.....or maybe today you heal the ladybugs back or other ailments by a miracle.

We all come, Lord, with so much in need of healing...you know our pains, our heartaches, our weaknesses, even our sins and failures, Lord, yet through it all you love us, keep us in your love, Oh God, and help us to find healing in your presence, and in times when we can't seem to sense your presence, and we find ourselves discouraged, help us to find healing in your promise, that you'll never leave us or forsake us, that we have forgiveness by Jesus through the cross, assurance by the empty tomb, the promise of your soon return to take us to be with you.

We Thank You, Father!
Help us to love you and each other more as the day approaches, please bless HonestlyHumbled and her friend, Lord, bless all who come to this site for whatever reasons and meet our individual needs as only you can, our Healer, our Provider, our Savior, and we ask all these things in the Wonderful name of Jesus! Amen.

My cousin had ALS... he was a firefighter in Wichita Falls, Tx... He was diagnosed, and he told us the doctor said he probably only had maybe a year. He lasted longer than that, maybe two and a half? He was the most positive, upbeat guy I've ever seen. He was ALWAYS smiling. He had an amazing turnout at his funeral...
I was not able to be around him much at all, we lived about 3 hours away, so I can't help you much on that. I think it's important to help them get out and about as much as possible.... do fun things. Emphasize the positive.... But as most others have said, there's really only one outcome... it's not curable, through mans' efforts, that is.

Anyone interested, search Kelly Crush on FB...

Any suggestions on fun things? I have never spent any part of my life in a wheel chair so unfortunately my knowledge is very poor.
I have limited access to internet, thank you once again for your input.x

Go to the park with him, feed the ducks if there are any. Take a walk around the block. Go to a carnival. Simple things like that. :)

^Great suggestions above^ (not a bad idea for myself, a simple walk may help fight the 'down' times, which can be common to singles, and the Lord may have a new things around the corner) Also, if going out is limited due to weather, etc., there's cards, board games, word or 'pencil' games, many are inexpensive and some are bible-themed, puzzles, and of course, taking turns reading scripture,
but keep it fun, read some OT to see some of the crazy stuff our forebears did, or psalms for blessings, or 1John for reassurance in God's eternal love and keeping,
and of course, any of the Gospels of our Lord and Savior Jesus and His wonderful love, deeds of kindness and mercy, miracles, so many things (it's endless, praise the Lord)
or read Acts for the exciting thrills, the epistles for joy, and The Revelation of Jesus Christ, for...for...indescribableness?!

Let His Word come alive for you as you minister to each other, and remember, a merry heart does good like a medicine.
(Now if I can just remember to apply some of this to myself.....)
Your friend is blessed to have you caring for him.
Maybe if you two get a moment, you could pray
for me to have, (and be), someone like that.
In fact pray for us all to be so blessed.
Praying for your friend, and so many suffering from devastating illnesses today.
