Why does he need "a ton of protein"?
These are suggestions, not a Doctor's diagnosis. I am not saying what the need is, I am suggesting proven ideas to gain weight. If you would like to get a Doctor to suggest protein is bad feel free...I'm all ears. But did I ever say, a "ton?" Joseph, what has your experiences suggested in terms of protein that is best not to use it? Again, all ears? Or in this case eyes...Smile. You look great, by the way, for being 58 in your avatar.

You suggested he eat steaks and then said they have a ton of protein.
Anyway, I am not picking on you. My point is that Americans eat way too much protein, especially animal protein.
It is a major cause of disease and accelerated aging in this country.

I absolutely agree! I had mentioned those items as an introduction to thinking differently toward moderate alternative add-ons in proportion to a healthy diet. I apologize if I didn't take the time to go into the whole balanced weight gain of lean options along with those considerations that can be used in part to add to the diet. I am not a dietician but having been trained in the medical field, I am totally on board with you in suggesting If you're underweight, aim to gain weight gradually until you reach a weight that is healthy for your age and height.

It's crucial that you gain weight the right way, and not by eating , cakes, chocolate, (sugary) drinks and other high-calorie foods full of saturated fats and sugar. These foods can increase your body fat instead of your lean body mass and can lead to an increased risk of developing high levels of cholesterol in your blood, and this is good for the subject of weight-deprived people as well. I'd aim for a six meal schedule over a three meal world. (Meaning small portions more often). Three meals and three snacks. Do not gorge to get more weight on! Eat at least five portions of a variety of fruits and vegetables every day ( the more organic the better). Now, also consult your physician over all this too, because there are many causes for weight lose, so be sure you understand this physiologically.

Base meals on certain preferred balances of starchy carbohydrates like rice or breads or even potatoes (but personally, even though I eat them, I put that last on the list although the skins leave on if you choose them, that's where the vitamins are). Choose wholegrain where possible (but research what grains to choose and where to get them). Have small amounts of dairy/dairy alternatives (such as soya drinks and yogurts which will feel more filling too, which if your wanting to lose weight will be helpful). And normally I would suggest to choose lower-fat and lower-sugar options, but in the case where all health risks are being looked at with underweight people adding a bit more of the higher protein and fatty meats (but never adding the sugars) may be options in small increments that won't hurt for a period of time. I have not seen Clinical Studies indicating this is not something plausibly reasonable.

Eat some beans, fish or chicken, eggs in moderation, meat and other natural proteins. I like two (sometimes three) portions of fish every week; to gain weight - one of those choices should be oily, such as salmon or mackerel. Choose unsaturated oils and spreads and, again, eat in small amounts. Now, here is one that is good for all weight issues - Drink plenty of fluids – the government recommends 6-8 cups/glasses a day. And water is king! Water makes what you want to happen happen more better! Yes, my linguistic technique was tarnished but the point was driven in harder because of it! Hopefully - Smile.

If you're having foods and drinks that are high in fat, salt and sugar, (and that's my issue, I love me my salts) have these less often and in small amounts. Try to choose a variety of different foods from the five main food groups.I believe God gave us what He did to use, but He gave us control over what He gave to use wisely and maintain it wisely. This isn't a thread on what we have done to food groups by our mass productions but suffice it to say, our grains today are not the grains of Jesus' time. We need to be thoughtful therefore with praying about how God would today have us eat. The good news is, there is no more Manna!

So, Joseph are we good bro?.... Fist pump!

I think you should ask a nutritionist about this. Your health is something you should not be playing with

Release your fear of being underweight. Fear binds us. Letting go of the fear and therefore the roots of it, leaves room for God and peace of mind, and then you can reach your goals because anything is possible with God. But with fear we are bound to what we fear. Surprisingly when you let go of the fear of something, you don't then run towards it which is what fear might tell you. eg. If I'm no longer afraid of being skinny won't I just not eat? No. But you will have to try it to realise this is true. Faith. Faith and fear don't belong in the same room.

I always drop weight when I eat junk. I gain and stay at a healthy weight when I eat clean. Get good fats and steer away from processed carbs and crap "food". And sugar. And do research before you try things like bottled shakes. You're far better to get a good high quality protein powder and fling that in milk than to drink the crap shakes.

Don't overeat just to gain weight. Overeating is the cause of all diseases. The secret of the japanese for long life is to eat healthy and until 80 percent full. I heared from someone who was trying to gain weight that after a meal, you should not move for at least an hour.

Good advice. Studies show that lower calorie diets decrease body temperature slightly and increase lifespans. This is a main reason why women live longer then men.
In fact a person who has relatively clean system can absorb more nutrients calorie for calorie then the average person whose body is loaded with toxins.
To gain clean quality healthy weight takes time and needs weight bearing large muscle group exercise. And a good night's sleep.
If you do it that way you will be healthy and fit, and your muscles will be denser.
Denser mature muscles look better and look bigger pound for pound then the rushed high calorie ballooned muscle look.

Build some muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat. Not sure if that's cheating or not though. ;)
This is a good piece of advice! I had the same issue several years ago. My trainer srecommended me to build some muscle. Of course, first you should understand what parts of your body you want to make bigger. And it is important to eat in a proper way. I should say, this article helped me a lot to choose good exercises and nutrition. Hopefully, you will also find it useful!

I was thin as a drain pipe in my teens and twenties. I was also so body
conscious I wore clothes a size too big, I hated my bosom and did every
thing I could think of to hide it. I never dieted or thought
about calories. :)

Stroll on middle age. I just look at a peanut and put on a elephant. Lol
I'm no where near as body conscious any more. Im currently on a diet
trying to get fit and slim and I can't wait to be able to wear clothes a size
smaller!

Unless you are unhealthy or have been advised medically to put on weight,
I wouldn't worry about it. Instead why not try some weight training to
build muscle.
my issue, I'm 5'4" and I weigh under 110 lb

Any ideas on how to gain weight? I am a little underweight and need to gain some.
Rule out a health issue that causes you to be underweight.
Several Things Can Cause Someone to Become Underweight

Exercise builds muscle which builds healthy weight.
Protein is a great weight gainer.
Be Blessed.
