Etiquette in the chat room
One of the biggest mistakes people seem to make is going into the chat room and thinking that everyone is ignoring them. As hard as I try to greet all the new members, if I am PM'ing with others, I usually don't notice when someone comes in and says "hi, everyone!". The computer will give a notice on the screen when a person who has just joined CC comes into the room, but they often immediately go to a different room before I have a chance to greet them. When you are still learning how to use the chatroom, I recommend putting the message "no private chat today, please" or something similar in your chat box window so you will only have to watch the main chat and listen to whoever is talking. It doesn't take long to get the hang of it, though. Responding to whoever is talking by typing in comments seems to be a good way to interact with everyone in the beginning. After you get used to everything, you can make your chat window say "Hi" or "PM's are welcome" or something similar if you want people to be able to send you a private message. If you only want to PM, you can turn the sound off, but I don't recommend doing so if you want to talk in the main chat. Most of what the people are typing has to do with what the speaker is saying, so you lose most of the main conversation if you have no sound. If anyone says anything creepy to you (anything dirty, etc.) or asks you for money, please report it to a moderator. If someone is just weird (like asking you your height, weight, salary, etc.) or annoying, click the "ignore" button.
People will often also assume that if someone types in "hahaha!" or "lol", it is because they are laughing at the question that was just typed in, when they are actually laughing at what the person speaking on the microphone just said. In fact, the laughter is almost always directed at the person talking unless someone else is specifically named
