Hi,

New here, Im not a believer, but Im here for guidance I gues.. I have someone in my life whose faith is very important to them. I am not an athesist, I just have no faith or belief. I am christian by upbringing, having been catholic until my father died and prodestant until the contridiction of those 2 branches of the faith hating each other became to rediculous to continue with.

Im from Scotland, which although still religious in places, is almost exclusivly secular, certainly where I am.

I am not uneducated in christianity, or faith in general, I understand and totally respect peoples beliefs, even if I dont share them. Although, I am not operating from ignorance, Im very aware that I dont have the answers.

I guess thats it, I hope I offend no one while Im here and any help I get will be much apprieciated.

Centurion.

If there a semantical issue, Im not sure I follow, semantics is the meaning of words. I think what you mean to say, and Im not questioning you per say Im merely addressing the semantics of your statement, but I think what you mean to call into question is a matter of grammar and punctuation. Either way I dont mean to be overly pedantic, I just am.

Thank you, for your unconstrutive critism and welcome, i hope your time is also productivly spent :)

Unconstructive criticism is my speciality... its a self-defense mechanism ;)
Actually my inference was that the lack of belief or faith in deities is also my position, yet I identify as an atheist. To be fair there are at least two definitions for it, and one of them I dislike. Its often stereotyped on us that we all claim to 'know' there is no God, then when we say that we 'don't know' (with 100% certainty), get lumped with agnostics who are 'unsure'. Strictly speaking most of us are agnostic, but usually when people say they're unsure on a subject is because they have conflicting, credible knowledge on it. Since the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence, we could make anything up that couldn't be tested then claim agnosticism towards it, but does that mean we're unsure of our belief towards it?.

Well youve no need to defend yourself from me, Im not here to attack anybody, but I didnt take offence or anything.

I totally, didnt get that from your post, if you inferred that, I missed it. But then I try to go on what people say rather than what I think there saying. Possably why I care more about somantics, than grammar and punctuation :). I would if pushed, say I was agnostic, in so far as I dont believe. Atheist, is not a defensible postion to me as it asserts as a fact that god/gods do not exist, this stand point requires evidence as does the assertion the god/gods do exist. And were are its true that lack of evidence is no evidence of lack, it is also valid to say that any extra ordinary claim requires evidence. It is just not intellectually valid to say you can't prove Im wrong, therefore Im right.

But, ultimatly Im not here to debate the existence or non existence of God, Im very conscious of the fact that this is a Christian site, and were as I do not share the faith they have in the existence of god this is not an appriorate venue to challenge that belief. I am here because some I care a great deal about is a christian and her faith is extremely important to her, the fact I am not christian is causing her some concern and Im looking for an honest way of addressing that. I could just say I was christian and play along, but that is contemptable both from my agnostic point of view, but also from a christian point of view.

Although, I am not now a christian, I was when I was growing up, and philosophy, religion and history hold a lot of academic in a lay fashion for me, I understand faith, I respect faith and I understand what it is to be and what is required to live a christian life. But, there is a large difference between having an intellectual idea of faith and having it, there is a difference between understand and on many point agreeing with christian values. And Im sure no one here would wish otherwise, bearing false witness is after all a sin.
