I've been told I should have done it differently and thought about so here goes.
Hi, I'm CaliBob, I figured ther'd be plenty of Bobs' and I'm from Long Beach, but cali is faster to write.
I was born in 54 abandoned at birth, fostered in 55 and adopted in 57. I called my step mother mom, she was catholic but shunned by the church for marring a non catholic. In spite of that I was raised catholic and went through the ritual, ceremonies and entrapments that went with it. I even went to catholic school but I became skeptical and turned me back on being Catholic at 18. A few years later I got arrested for not paying a traffic ticket and wound up in the can for 3 days. The only thing to do was read and the only thing was a Good News pocket version of Mark. (I'm thankful).
I began praying to a god I didn't know and a savior I only hoped in. Through a near miracle of meeting a homeless person who introduced me to a group of what I thought were hippies but were in fact what we used to call 'Jesus freaks' sitting in a park, goofing off (I thought) but were really doing a bible study. I was invited to an auditorium to worship with them, (they couldn't afford a sanctuary), and that's how I got saved. So the next time you see a bunch of weirdos goofing off somewhere, "judge not!"
Since then I've volunteered at homeless shelters, counseling centers, (including suicide prevention) drug, alcohol and ex-convict, rehab. I had California certification as a substance abuse counselor but lost it for admitting I was afraid of gays with aids whom I worked with every day. I was more or less blackballed for being 'homophobic'. (I was afraid of aids, then).
Now I'm retired, live in Oklahoma, help support my daughter and her family. I stumbled upon this site by asking questions about Quakerism on line because 'I' don't think 'being Christian' should be a political identity in a nation that is based on the seperation of church and state and if you disagree with me you can either keep it to yourself or propose an amendment. I'm an American too.
Well, that's who I am, what I am, what I believe, and why. the short version at least so let this stand as my intro. Any questions? I remain here because I desire to intelligent discourse with other Christians of any denomination who don't feel the need to tow the party line. Thank you and good-bye for now, CaliBob
