my question is, how to overcome the perception that
a slave is someone who is forcefully controlled by a might-makes-right slave master?

I gotta get a new microwave.png . The outlet breaker popped off the other day, and I thought it was the microwave finally dying, so I unplugged it and took it outside. Came back in and discovered it was only the stupid breaker, but I've been wanting to get a new microwave anyway, so it's all good.. (y)(y)

i usually point out that slavery in modern times has a different connotation than it did it biblical times because in America we had a particularly brutal form of forced slavery in the 1700's. Often times people's perception of biblical slavery is skewed because they look at it through a modern historical lens, which is an intellectual error in my opinion.
Then i point out the correlations between biblical slavery and modern day employment. Most people will say "yes but we are protected by rights under the law, etc" at which point i'll point out that so where the Hebrew slaves in the Law of Moses.
In the end it's really just the term that trips people up because like i said, modern day historical lens.

Also expounding on the definitions of the Hebrew word for slave should help.

If you are faced with the question of whether or not to surrender, make a determination to go on through the crisis, surrendering all that you have and all that you are to Him. And God will then equip you to do all that He requires of you. This is having the audacity to allow the Lord be indeed your Sovereign Lord and Master.
