How do you learn and think?

Some coursework had me thinking of asking the others here how you learn... I mean learning not just in school, but at home, in church, at work, outside.

I've long tried to memorize 2 Tim. 3.16 (16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, ) and thought i did, then when trying to retrieve from memory, was often incomplete. But other verses learned through song just came back "naturally." I just havent made a melody for 2 Tim. 3.16, but if you have one, that is welcome.

Starting very early in the day is also good for me, unless there was something else important to be done, so there is no choice. I used to criticize the children who crammed, for i want extra time to organize papers, for example, then revise thru available time. But some educators say there are people who have different learning styles, and appreciate the adrenaline that comes with rushing their requirements a day or two before deadline. So their learning is also valid=).

How do you learn and think?

I am an audio learner. If I hear it I do not forget it. That is why I actually had to go to class in college, so I could hear the lectures. I also have a photographic memory so I can pull a page, of something up in my mind and see it. But where I fall extremely short of "brain" knowledge, which gave me 3.8 in college is practical application....

I listen to the Bible when I sleep.... for me I think when I'm sleeping to the point it wakes me up... So I set my Bible app to play out loud when I go to bed. I have had the same Bible for 20 some years so I can picture which chapter and how many verses down in my head...

I can quote Scripture, but unless I have my Bible I I get messed up on where they live, but I know the neighborhood... Practical living Scripture only comes from living and G-d and lots of forgiveness....

For college, the first thing I found out was if the professor wrote his/her own test or used the one from the book. If it was from the textbook I took the practice test over and over again until I had it memorized.... that is how I got an A in A++ and atomy. For the others when there were projects due I always asked my professor for an appointment to go over my work. They would. I found out in that each one's style and they always points me to my A.

But none of this you can do in the last 3 days; you need at least 4-6 weeks.

I learn bible verses better if part off a song too. In fact if I hear a tune once,
I can mostly play it back by ear without any written music, and/or come up
with a harmony part. I did that a lot in the worship team.

I also learn better from doing things myself, so if someone shows me how to
do something, I learn some. But if I do it myself, that’s better for me.

I think as you get older your ability to learn things quickly does change to.

Thanks for the insights. I was recalling a verse from an old Bible from my sister (maybe 30 yrs old Bible) wc i esp like to go back to, for the familiar line drawings too. but even as i am thinking of the verse, i wasnt sure where to find it esp with a headache. Here's Prov. 23.12 instead:

i believe it is different for everyone, not all of us are born with
exactly the same traits...some have good memories and some
don't...some understand quickly and others take longer... so the
best i can say is...do the best you can with what you've got.

Thank you. I understand learning involves both Nature and Nurture. As we often hear, even siblings are very different, learn and grow very different.

And that is why not only teachers and trainors, but even parents need to understand how learning occurs, learning styles of others. I remember listening to quiet music or radio in the background as i studied. Then when i saw my children listening just a tad louder to background sounds, i didnt quite approve. Then i realized it was the kind of music they were listening to that was not like what i listened to, and not their listening while studying that was really my issue=).

Learning is also such a broad matter. We do learn at different rates, and so comes in motivation. In the Bible, i see listening as a major part of learning. I didnt think the guys were listening or minded when the radio was on in the morning. But one day, one was telling of using as an example in class about this line oft repeated after a morning program: 'Life is not a series of chances, but series of choices.' Well, someone's been listening!

Write it down over and over. You will remember it after that.

Hi @mar09, I agree. In real estate, the three secrets to success are 1. Location 2. Location 3. Location. The memorization mantra is similar, 1. Repetition 2. Repetition 3. Repetition

Of all of the Christian disciplines, none IMHO, give more consistent blessings than memorization work does. That said, none are more like "work" at times than memorization work is either, especially in the beginning. Still, as hard as it is sometimes, the blessings, for yourself and then for others through you, FAR outweigh any amount of work you have to put into it!

I memorized key verses and passages using the Topical Memory System from the Navigators. The Navigators have been training their missionaries with that system for about 80 years now, so it is both a tried & proven system, and worth checking out if you have the time. It has just became available as both Apple and Android apps, and I would recommend that over the way we all memorized verses in the past using business card-sized flash cards, because with the apps, you can recite your verse and then check how you did by playing it back.

You might also give Scripture Typer a shot.

So, to practice, say the apps in your head, speak them out loud, sing them, have someone check them as you say them, write them out, type them, etc., whatever you can do to get those repetitions in. I also break each verse down into phrases and memorize one phrase at a time. Then I combine two "learned" phrases together to make a longer one, on and on, until the verse or passage is memorized perfectly (incl the verse reference and topic). I also recite each phrase perfectly 10x before moving onto memorizing the next phrase, etc.

There's a bit more (like how continually deepening your understanding of each verse can help with memory work too), but this is enough for now.

That seems very good advice, Zt. I'll try to remember that. When younger, i liked to do oral reading so i hear what was being read. Now that seems like the audios so common nowadays, but you do the reading and u can't close your eyes to listen if ur the one reading.

Time was when my husband was telling about keeping on learning, and to strive to excel as long as we're doing something, and keep on improving, whatever that is we're doing. I quite knew what he was talking about, but rather had a fixed mindset instead of the growth mindset. Now i know what it's called, and understanding why i had to have my alibis=).

Yes, reading out loud helps too. The reason is because speaking and writing involves muscle memory and physical touch so you won't just be trying to remember the words, but you will also remember how it felt to write or say them.

Thanks, deuteronomy. I was typing at the time you sent in your reply. The bit about continuing understanding is of course essential, as it is not simply head knowledge we're after but application of concepts/principles learned.

That is one of the wondrous parts for a Christian who is memorizing the word of God (over all other kinds of memorization work, that is). We also have the Lord there to help us learn and to teach us more and more about each verse/passage as we go along, so be sure to ask the HS for His help each time you do your memory work

I can tell you that it will "feel" rote/mechanical, especially at first, like you are just trying to gain head knowledge (and that with each new verse that you learn). But WOW does it seem less that way when you begin to see what an ever-increasing spiritual blessing it becomes in your life

BTW, I've found that sinning becomes far more difficult to do when you hide so much of His word in your heart (in this very special way), because every time you are tempted to sin, the HS brings 2-3 perfectly memorized verses to the forefront of your mind that remind you why you shouldn't do it!

Whoops, I meant to say, "say the verse in your head..." I must have been thinking about speaking to the app so you can hear if you said it correctly or not when I was writing that.

I wish this place allowed us more time to go back and correct our mistakes. I definitely make more of them than ever now that I'm in my 60's.

One thing which always surprises me, is how out of nowhere I suddenly remember a
bible verse which exactly fits a situation. That’s not me, that’s God. 🙂

Psalm 119 is great on this subject.

It just occurred to me that I added to several of my Navigator's Topical Memory System verses as I went along (or perhaps even after I first learned them), often because I felt it was either valuable to have more context, and/or the adjoining verse(s) helped me better remember the principle verse. I think this was true of 2 Timothy 3:16 (which I now have memorized as 2 Timothy 3:16-17).

A part of those who have been born again knows all things but I think you are talking about how someone In the world thinks and learns and In my opinion I would say that GOD gave man five senses see taste hear smell and feel and by using one of these senses the person thinks and learns.

A man looks Into a physical mirror and trust that Image concerning the flesh but In order to see the Inward man you must look at the spiritual mirror called the bible.

A man looking Into a physical mirror might say IE.Is that a mole on my face Is that cancer,GOD said I’m healed but according to this physical mirror I can’t see It where as the bible says I’m healed.
