Proverbs 3:5 says to trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. With that, we can be tempted to stop right there as far as any understanding of God goes, and just accept whatever He does, as Adam and Eve would have done if they didn’t eat from the Tree of Good and evil. And the Bible tells us, by means of Proverbs 3:5, that it is fruitless to understand God. Isaiah 55:8 tells us why, in saying “…my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.”

But as 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work,” a certain degree of understanding is necessary, even if it doesn’t include understanding God’s motives. In a world where there is a constant clash between good and evil, we must be sure of our footing, lest we find ourselves surrounded and hamstrung by the evil around us.

And Jeremiah 9: 23-24 opens the window somewhat to our understanding of God, as it says “Thus says the LORD: ‘Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, THAT HE UNDERSTANDS AND KNOWS ME, THAT I AM THE LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the LORD.’”

So with that, a reading of the Bible seems to indicate that there are inconsistencies in God’s ways, although even in the natural world there are no inconsistencies. The author Ayn Rand, of “Atlas Shrugged” fame, once wrote that contradictions in and of themselves do not exist, and if we think we see contradictions we should check our premises for at least one of them is wrong.

What brought to mind the thought that God may be inconsistent? Well, in Genesis 9:3, God says to Noah, after the Flood, “Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you.” Since there is no qualifier, “every moving thing” would include pigs and other animals considered to be pork if they existed then. It would also include lobsters and anything else that crawls along the ocean floor if they existed then also. Yet in Leviticus 11, God made a Law to not eat pigs and similar animals in Verse 7, and in Verse 10 to not eat lobsters and similar animals who live in the ocean but don’t have fins and scales. Why, after hundreds of years, has God now picked on animals like pigs and lobsters? He does seem to be inconsistent.

As Jesus said he came to fulfill God’s Law, it is up for consideration. And for that matter, the hundreds of Laws in Leviticus and Deuteronomy did not exist at the time of Noah, so why do they appear at the time of Moses? This is not to question whether God’s Laws should be accepted, it is just questioning the inconsistency.

And yet again, when Jesus comes along, he implies that we need not abide by all those hundreds of Laws; all we have to do is abide by two Laws, that we love God and we love eachother. And since Jesus is acting on behalf of God, God decided, for whatever reason, for our thoughts are not His thoughts and our ways are not His ways, to instruct Jesus to tell the people that if they abide by just those two Laws they will be saved.

But where is the consistency between God in the time of Noah, and of Moses and of Jesus? Perhaps for our own purposes we can just resolve that God desired all along for us to just love Him and love eachother, and therein may lie the consistency of premise, so there really is no contradiction or inconsistency.

Actually imo I would say he is not consistent. I have always said how God tends to be unpredictable and that is because he is inconsistent in the way he does things. I mean ask yourself how many times something has happened in your life in which God dealt with but not how you expected? We know his patterns even in the bible yet he always seems to surprise us in new ways almost like he wants to keep us on our toes.

He even dealt with salvation itself in a non consistent way, all through out the ot salvation was always brought to the people wither by God giving them victory in battle or using people with his wisdom no one expected salvation to be won by the passive way Jesus did it it's like God decided to switch up his style. Not to mention if he was consistent then we would know what he was going to do in advance and thus blind faith would be irrelevant. Even just a simple prayer itself is a great example, one can ask and believe they will receive and can have the faith of an iron hammer but in the end no one really knows how he is going to answer that prayer, when he is going to answer it or what effects is going to come from the prayer itself.

He isn't consistent because his ways are not our ways and his thoughts are not our thoughts, he isn't predictable he is random he is a mystery he is exciting and you never know what amazing thing he is going to stir up or do next.

Actually the instructions to Noah about NO DIETARY RESTRICTIONS (other than consumption of blood) are identical to the instructions to Christians in the New Testament.

However, in the case of Israel, God selected a specific nation to be holy (set apart for Himself) in order to bring Messiah to the world. Therefore they were given very specific laws (including dietary restrictions). But the Old Covenant was to be a temporary covenant until the coming of Christ. Now, in the case of Christians, the spiritual takes precedence over the physical and material, so dietary restrictions mean nothing.

As a general principle God must be consistent (and is consistent) because He is immutable -- He does not change. However His dealings with humanity change from dispensation to dispensation because of human weakness.

Blain, Blain, Blain.......I cannot believe you said that......God is the only constant and consistent entity to be found....HE 100% of the time operates within the bounds of his holy nature and character and even states...I am the LORD THY GOD I CHANGE NOT.......wow..........
I think maybe you misunderstand or rather I didn't explain it well, actually I gave dino a ribbon for his response because he said what I attempted to say in only one sentence God's character, motivation and plan do not change. God's methods do change.

I find an inconsistency between something you've said and whats revealed in God's word. Mainly that God sent Jesus to "tell the people that if they abide by just those two Laws they will be saved." Since when has our salvation ever been dependent upon our independent actions? The Law of Moses leads us to Christ, revealing our inadequacy to meet God's demand of perfection thereby revealing our dependence upon Christ.

Not really the point of your thread, but it sticks out to me. Don't mean to derail your thread...

People think everything is set in stone, but I think that there are different possibilities left to the will of man (rather, their surrender). God will still meet His end goal, but if one man doesn't step into his role God will simply choose another to fulfill it. So many prophecies were with clauses, that if this one thing happened this would occur, but if this doesn't happen then this will fail. I wouldn't necessarily call it contingencies, as if God is taken by surprise, but God knows all possibilities.

If you mean "is God right on time?" then my answer is yes.

There are periods throughout my life where I did not see or feel the presence of God. But every time before all hell broke loose and the outcome depended upon something miraculous or out of the norm, God HAS ALWAYS come through.

I have learned being tried is much like purifying the gold within the fire. And just as the gold is at its purest and before the fire consumes it, God removes it from the fire. This is how I view my own walk in God. I can feel the heat rising as circumstances begin to turn against me with false accusations and assumptions and so forth. It feels like heaping shovel loads of dirt upon a grave burying you deeper and deeper. And just before there is no more air to breathe, God comes through. Those who lied and held the shovels now are the ones taking the heat.

So YES INDEED, God is absolutely consistent!!
