A few months from now, America and non-medicinal alcohol part ways. Such is the gist of the Volstead Act, which will take effect January 16. After that, Americans may not legally make, sell, or transport intoxicating liquors, which they like to call "hooch". The measure is designed to enforce the 18th Amendment, ratified January 29. It also prohibits the sell of liquor in restaurants, hotels, and, of course, saloons. Though the bill was vetoed by President Wilson, his veto was overridden by the House and, today, by the Senate. - Washington, D.C., October 28, 1919
