It's been complained about umpteen times, but the time allotted is purposeful. It won't change, as has been repeatedly stated. Feel free to dig through the other 1000 threads on the topic for more details.
It's not really a big deal and, to me, makes more sense. Just proof read before you post and don't post anything you worry you'll regret later and it's rarely a problem.

The reason for the 5 minute rule is to prevent someone from radically altering their post in a way that disrupt the natural flow of the conversation. You would have posts quoted as originally stated but now have a post that in no way is even close to the original or even totally contrary. It is possible to give a positive reaction to the original post but later it may have been changed in a way that you don't agree with as well. It is always best to proof read before submitting and then read it again in case you may want to edit it before the 5 minutes are up. After 5 minutes the post permanent and cannot be changed by the poster. A post is rarely deleted by a mod either, again, to avoid the natural flow of the conversation in the thread.

For me it's about being more intentional with what I post instead of just letting stream of consciousness out. It's a good rule...but it is hard for me 
I don't mind additions (for further clarification instead of clogging with another post) but typical form on the Internet is to write EDIT: and add anything you forgot.
It would be cool to add a forced EDIT: (insert new text) only for additions kind of like a quote but the system is reasonable and requires more thought so I like it.
