Delight Yourself In The Lord ( Psalm:37 )

He Will Give You The Desires Of Your Heart,

The more we really surrender to God, the more we receive His
gifts. If we are given any gift and don't use it then we are really
not benefiting from it. That means we really need to attach all
that we are to Him. It is what gives meaning to our lives. it is no
longer just words, it is a matter of complete faith in Him. Then
as we draw nearer we sense His love more, we want to do His
will more and these are ways that His love begins to glow in our
heart. His Spirit makes us free, the ties that used to bind us by
the law are no longer relevant in the new covenant. God sent
His Son Jesus to make the example that love is the law. If we
don't love then we have done nothing at all. All the seeds have
fallen on barren ground, few if any have become fertile. All we
we do needs to come from the heart and not because of a law.

I would love to contribut here, but you have said it all. I am able to say truly, the longer I know Jesus, Yeshua, the more love abounds…...to serve Him is love, I think.

Hi DustyRhodes, I normally agree with most of what you say in your posts, and that is true of most of your OP this time around as well, but your opening sentence makes our relationship with God sound like some kind of quid pro quo affair to me which, if true, would make God into a kind of Cosmic Sugar-Daddy, wouldn't it?

Is, the more we surrender to God ... the more we receive back from Him as a result, what this verse is actually trying to teach us?


I guess the question for me is this, is v4 admonishing us to "delight God", or to "delight ourselves in God"? Is there a difference? Perhaps this also begs the question, what does it mean to, "delight yourself in the Lord"?

"Delight yourself in, be glad in, take pleasure in, rejoice in the Lord..." to me that sounds like a very close association with God, as His very good friend. Someone you are extremely happy to be with.

Jesus said, "I no longer call you servants (slaves), because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you."

Jesus has made known to us what He knows. Even His desires to please the Father.

Therefore, He gives us the desires.... HIS desires. And they become desires in our heart as well.

As always when I mean we get more from God, I mean more
in the sense of how much we grasp deeply in Him. I should

In my view, delighting in the lord is this. That we empower ourselves in all
the good things He pours out on us. If we neglect what he gives us, we are
then not delighting in Him....thanks for your comment.

I can no more empower myself than I can save myself. Jesus makes me delight in Him as He consumes me with His mighty grace and love and conforms me into His image by His Spirit day by day. Anything good that He performs thru me is all to His glory. I am amazed that the more I rest in Jesus, the more my eyes are on only Him, the more He is glorified in my life.

Back when I was a kid .. a LONG time ago .. one of the general, societal themes focused on this question, "what is the meaning of life"? People seemed obsessed with finding the answer to that question back then, so we'd always end up seeing things like cartoon pictures in newspapers and magazines of a couple trying to reach a guru sitting on the peak of a high mountain to ask him that question, but no one, not even the long-bearded, mountain top gurus, ever seemed to have the answer.

I was in the same boat with everybody else, of course, always wondering what that "meaning of life" really was, until the day I finally became a Christian, that is

The reason I bring this up is because the most concise answer that I know of for that question comes from the Westminster Shorter Catechism, Q & A #1, and part of what it says reminds me of the admonishment found in Psalm 37:4, "delight yourself in the Lord".


For me, this is just another way of saying, "delight yourself in the Lord", loving & enjoying Him forever, & being loved by Him as His child

The things that we choose to "do", pleasing/honoring/glorifying/obeying Him, happen ~because~ we know Him (and because He knows us), and because of the ongoing, loving relationship that we have with Him, yes?

I don't believe that doing stuff for God, including making the most out of what He's given us, is what is meant by delighting yourself in Him. Rather, I think it has far more to do with resting in Him, as @AuntieAnt mentioned above.
