Proverbs 3:5 says to trust in the Lord with all your heart and to not lean toward your own understanding; this is a matter of faith. 2 Timothy 3:16 says that all Scripture is breathed out by God for our teaching, reproof, correction and training in righteousness.

The Scriptures describes certain acts that have taken place. We have the Flood, we have fire and brimstone raining on Sodom and Gomorrah, the parting of the Red Sea, and Samson destroying a temple of the Philistines with his bare hands, just to name a few. Some people want and seek some earthly verification of these acts having actually happen.

To anyone whose faith in God is strong, this is entertaining at best. As a matter of faith, it should be enough that the Scriptures says it happened, so it happened. To question the veracity of the Scriptures is to question God Himself. God does say, in Isaiah 1:18 to “let us reason together,” but it seems that the reasoning God refers to is in the form of His teaching us, not in the form of equal give and take of arguments, as that passage continues, “though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.”

We should be cautious, vigilant and prudent against anyone seeking to discredit the events in the Bible. Who knows where their path would lead? It certainly doesn’t lead to God. In that regard, people having little or no faith in God believe they have nothing to lose by trying to discredit the Scriptures.

What to do if they are in our proximity? Jesus in Matthew 5:16 says, “…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” 2 Timothy 4:2 says, “ preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.”

And what is faith? Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Key word is NOW. Not in the future, but NOW. There are plenty of doubting Thomas’ in this world, or Philips for that matter, who only believe it when they see it. How did Jesus respond to his Philip, who asked him to show him the Lord? Jesus in John 14:9-10 says “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.”

Jesus has been known to the world for a long time. His words are in the Scriptures, which are breathed out by our Father, under the authority of our father. We who have faith can watch, say, the Discovery Channel or the History channel with amusement when they visit sites mentioned in the Bible in their quest for the veracity of events stated in the Bible, with us knowing that if the Scriptures says it happened, that is enough for us.

People who have not yet come to faith should be encouraged to test the Scriptures... diligently. Many people test them halfheartedly, and give up because they are offended or confused. Truth has nothing to fear from investigation. We cannot test every historical event, but we should encourage people to test events recorded in Scripture with other historical events. If someone is inclined to reject the Bible because of the perceived paucity of historical evidence, they are not likely to accept any amount as sufficient.
