We were both 16 and met on AIM or some chatroom. We talked all the time so we became bf and gf. We are both poor so we never met up. We are still friends though and he is engaged now. I’m happy for him!

I have found dating people online to he easier. There's not a lot to do but talk and communicate. Whereas in person people are more prone to activities that distract from communication (movies for example).
Of course if you have no means to eventually meet in person then it does seem rather silly. But if you don't have that restriction then it can be quite helpful.
