How do we appropriate God's grace?
If you go with the definition, 'to use for a special purpose'...it just doesn't work that way. Rather God takes us and uses us for His purpose, which should really be considered a privilege. He sets the agenda.
We can and should prepare ourselves though...

2 Timothy 2:20-21 KJVS
[20] But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. [21] If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.

How did you arrive at this question? Grace is freely offered to those who repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. That's why it is called "Amazing Grace".

How we appropriate grace - Thru FAITH!

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
(NOTE: God "GAVE" a fallen world his Son. Christ is God's grace/gift, we appropriate this gift/grace thru Faith)

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
(NOTE: Grace is a gift, appropriated thru Faith)

Romans 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
(NOTE: We access/appropriate God's grace thru Faith)

For the record......grace is also a position that one is placed into and stands in after salvation........

In the grace you are, having been saved out of faith and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God and not of works lest any man should boast <----a more literal translation

and

We have also obtained access through him by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

and

Where sin abounds, GRACE abounds the more <--written to believers

Grace is a position.....we are immersed into it at the moment of belief....

In this context appropriate would fall Into the category of us being blessed to be a blessing or grace for grace.

GOD uses obedient people to carry out needs that others have.

IE
You have been praying for something.

GOD tells someone that HE has already blessed to give you something and they give It.

I heard someone preaching a sermon. He mentioned appropiating grace is important if you want to have peace. I don't think he was using the word in the sense of to take without permission but perhaps having a true understanding of God's grace.

We appropriate grace when we stop trying to contribute to His Life!
We agree with Him that His life is more than sufficient alone.
That is the Life that we now have in us, the Life that naturally rises up and flows through us.

What do you mean about not contributing to his life? Do you mean that we stop trying to earn or maintain salvation and trust in Jesus that his life and sacrifice on the cross was enough to save and keep us saved?

Well he was simply misleading his audience.

Grace and peace have been extended to believers ever since they became saints. See the benedictions at the beginning of every epistle. This is not because we deserve them, but because God is infinitely gracious, and the merits of Christ are infinitely perfect. We are to simply believe God and what He says.

To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called [to be] saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. (Rom 1:7)

I will agree "appropriating" is not a good verb to use and I should have perhaps used "avail" ourselves to the riches of his grace, as in to make use of.

I suppose yes you are would be right if he means peace with God. But if someone does not realize or understand the grace given them in Christ, peace in the heart or mind will be more elusive.

Is this your response to the OP or Is this just something you wanted to post?
Maybe the question should be,how do we appropriate grace through faith?

I may should have put for the question: "how do we come to a true or good understanding of the grace of God?"That is closer to what I meant by the question at the beginning. Basically how do you know the grace given us in Christ in a way that would bring you peace in your heart?

We could say 'we appropriate grace as He first appropriates us. lol

1 John 4:19 (KJV) We love him, because he first loved us.
Philippians 2:13 (KJV) For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

That would be too quick a thread...
(Rom 10:17) So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
so if God doesn't speak to you then we are not getting faith.

It doesn't say Faith come from Reading the word of God.
